Wow!!! You guys have all the fun! I stayed behind at the show and missed all the good stuff. At least I did win a top 25 award. Never in heck expected that though since it was participant voting and 115 cars. That was a 1st for me. Well, glad you guys had fun...true friends woulda called me though. Going back in the morning and will hit the road by 11am heading home. Enjoyed seeing you guys again. Check back in when I get home.
That sucks to hear Earl... glad you made it home alright. That Boss 429 Maverick was definitely awesome. It sounded real good. My POS seemed so unworthy to be sitting next to it. Never did get to talk to the guy that drove it in there. Interestingly, while the top half of the shock towers had been shaved and moved outwards, the upper control arms were not modified. Congrats Ray!
We loaded up shortly after Ray pulled out and missed the rain. I did get in a small shower around Winder, but nothing major. Had a little drizzle on the expressway, mostly from when the tractor trailers passing by. Stopped at Huddle House in Loganville and pigged out. Car in front of me nailed a deer on the highway at the road to my subdivision. Lucky I was slowing down to make the turn or you will be reading another bad luck story. Only thing that I can complain about is cold french fries. I guess I had all my bad luck the day before with the new fuel pump going bad. I had a great time and it was an honor to finally meet some of you guys. I can’t wait till next year. I will post my pictures later but right now is bed time.
Here's a link to the photos I took at FFW. Be sure to check out the shock towers in 1st photo. http://1bad6t.com/ffw08/index.html
Thanks, Jeff. Didn't get many pics myself, but glad you did. Glad you made it home ok, and no problems. Catch you later,
Yeah Frank, we made it! Got back about 4:00 CDT, absolutely no problems coming home. As mentioned before, going over was a different story......... We made it to Atlanta fine, got on I285 going north, and noticed one of the trailer tires looked like it was wobbling a bit, so I pulled over on exit 12. I jacked up the trailer and pulled on the tire to check the bearings, and it felt a little loose. Instead of trying to fix it there, I went up to the Petro Truckstop at that exit, jacked it up again, and snugged the wheel bearing down. It wasn't very loose, one slot on the nut did it. Then I realized what the problem was, I had broken one of the wheel bolts off and the others had loosened up enough to cause the wheel to slip, ruining it and three of the bolt wedges [mobile home axles on the trailer, a mistake I will soon change]. The Petro shop wouldn't fool with it, so I went about a 1/4 mile up the road to another shop. $60 and one hour later, I had the tire swapped onto my spare wheel, and the weather cracked spare on the damaged wheel just in case, new wedges, and bolted back up. No more wobble, but now we are dead into Atlanta rush hour. Oh well, every thing was fine on up to Commerce. Ray met us in the parking lot and helped unload the car, Thanks Ray! I went and cleaned up a bit and Deb and me met Ray and his wife Deb and grandson for supper at Ryans. We drove the Maverick over to Ryans and back, every thing was fine.......now on to Saturday....................................................................................... Saturday morning, we get up, go to Mickey D's in the Maverick for breakfast, then it's off to the track. Get to the track, the sign says "car show", with an arrow pointing right, so we go right. Guy at the gate says he knows nothing about the Dixie Maverick meet, and he doesn't have any single day tickets, so we buy the two day tickets, no big deal, figure we might come back on Sunday and watch some racing. While we are sitting idling, the water temp starts to rise. We go idling in real slow, looking for the guys, and the water temp gets higher, and higher. We spot the guys, head down that way, but we have to drive around the roped off block to get in, by now the temp is up to 220 and she's steaming the windsheild. Finally get parked and shut her down, but leave the fan running until it cools enough to check the water, and it's bone dry.....I have never had a problem with this engine running hot, and it doesn't have a thermostat, so I know that's not the problem, maybe blown a head gasket or cracked a head . Any way, enjoy the day with all the guys, saw lots of cool cars, got a few pieces for Deb's Mustang, sweated a lot, even laughed when our awning decided to make like a kite and blow over. Later on, when we got ready to go, we refilled the rad with water, and drove back across the interstate to Zaxby's, thought that was where Dan, Earl, and Jamie were going, but they weren't there, saw Mike's truck and car, but somehow missed him, too. When we came out, noticed water under the car for the first time. Got to checking it out, and it was coming from the heater core tubes......then felt the floor on the passenger side and it was soaked. That's where I lost my water and made it run hot, I had hooked up the heater hoses just before we left, and with only 30 miles or so on the car, hadn't noticed it was leaking. I bypassed the core when we got home, we drove it to church and back tonight, and it never got over 185 degrees. So, even with a few glitches, we still had a great time!
Bobby ... glad to hear you made it back safe and sound ... and happy to hear the overheating turned out to be an easy fix. Thanks for coming to the show .... Dan P.S. Earl is having heater hose/heater core problems too ...
I forgot to get a picture but I see Jeff did ... Ralph Price also bought a matching 3-spoke RimBlow wheel from the dealer back in 1971 when he bought his 71 Grabber so he put it on for the show ... What you think that wheel is worth unrestored with all the original wood grain?
Well, we made it home a couple hours ago. Dang-it!!! I don't have any exciting stories to tell like you guys!!! Oh well, I did have a great time anyway. Terry, you asked for the guys name with the Boss 429 car...Vic Temple. I tink he told me he lived there about 20 miles south of Commerce. I have his phone number too. That was one badazz car! It has never even been serialized...no vin number or title. It was bought off the assemble line and has been a race car (Holman Moody) from day one. I'm going to search thru some of the old pics we've seen and see if I may be able to find it. I bet we've seen it before. Anyway, thanks again guys...enjoyed it! :Handshake Thanks Dan. Yes, I won last year but it was on day 2 (Sunday) of the show where they actually judged the cars. I registered this morning also since I had already paid for it but I was pretty sure I wouldn't be around long enough to get judged. I left the track just before 11am. I feel like I could have won again if I had stayed. There were less than 50 cars there today. Two years ago there were probably 150. The postponement of the event really hurt everything this year...racing AND show. Very few of the big boys were even there racing. I guess you guys noticed all the vacant parking spaces close to the Maverick area. Anyway, thanks again guys.
Definitely hope it's in April like usual next year (assuming we have it at Fun Ford again). Man, I've worked 12 hour days in 100+ heat inside a building no problem, but being out there from 8:30-3:30 in the sun on that black top even about killed me. I was sweating like a dog just standing in one place... Then I started looking around and noticed about everyone was! Still had a great time though.
i don't know what it is worth but that is the nicest unrestored car i have ever seen... whan people would walk up to glance at it and someone (me) would mention it was all original thier jaw would drop. it was impressive to be looking at a car that has all the nuts, bolts, screws and (that bracket) that came from the factory. even had the tires bought in '75 on it... Ralph pointed out that the p/s belt had a motorcraft part # and a 2/71 date on it... overheard a guy telling his buddy (as he looked inside) that "he had one just like it in H/S, except his came with a...4 bbl.-4 speed."... ...Frank...
Here's a few shots I took of the Boss 429 Holman Moody Maverick. I also found a couple of original pics of it from the 70's.
