Howa-bout-cha everyone I have one of them infamousness questions that come up ever so often. I have a stock 2 door 74 Maverick that I want to equip 275/60 tires on Cragar’s Series 610 15 x 8 rims. I went through the past posts on this topic, but the more I read, the more confuse I got  about backspacing. Do anybody have any new info or can help on this old question  ?????

If you can fit a 8-inch wheel of the back of your Maverick without rubbing, I'd definitely like to know about it...

You can get a 8" wheel on a stock rear as long as the backspacing is 4 to 4 1/4". But I doubt with 275 r 60 without rubbing issues. Rolled fender lips would probably have to be done with any size tire.

agh:slap: 8 inches to wide and 60 series to tall, guess I better stick with a 7 inch rim and 50 series tire but if I use this combo can I use a 4 inch backspacing?

Its not the 60, its the 275 that will probably give you problems. I have run 245r60x14 on my stock 77 and had bunches of room. This was on a 6" rim. My Sprint has 255r60x15 on a 8" rim with 4 1/2" of backspacing, but I also had a rear narrowed by 1/4" on each side for clearence. I tried the combo on my stock 77 just to see how it fit. The tires just barley rubbed the springs. The 50 series tires in my opinion are too short and dont look right because they dont fill the wheel well. I would think you could run a 245r60x15 on a 7" rim with around 3 1/2 to 4" backspacing with no problems.

I kind of have a rule of thumb on this subject. Without body mods a 8' wheel with 4" of backspacing and up to a 9" tread. Next concern is height, too many variables to try and put a rule of thumb on that. Another thing, and I dont know why, but for some reason, some cars will accept what others wont.

ps I do have 17 x 8 rims on the rear with a 9" tread

I have 275/60r15's on the back of mine. The rear is raised a bit, but not too drastic.
An 8" wheel with 3 3/4 backspacing fits best so far as I've tried.

I have a set of 295/50r-15 on mine...with no rubbing whatsoever! I had my wheel lips rolled though and I'm using an 8" rim with 4" offset..fronts are 215/70r-14's

Ray how much lift do have because I am going to order some new leaf spring from J.C. Whitney to help aid my tires since my leaf springs are the orginal ones that came with the car?

    275s on rear

Courier, can you post a pic of the 275s? Also, mavaholic. You say that the 255s fit on the narrowed rear but not the stock one. Was the rear narrowed or the springs moved inward. In ask because a narrowed rear would make the situation worse when compared to stock with regard to hitting the leaf spring, correct? Just trying to understand why they work on the narrowed rear.

I'll try to take a decent picture soon. Lots going on these days. I'm not sure exactly how much lift over stock the shackles I made provide. Probably a good couple of inches.

Now read on as I get a good talking too about using shackles to lift a vehicle.
