Whats even FUNNIER is I saw Gene's name as the most recent poster on the thread and I clicked on it thinking I'd see he had actually done something to his car. :rofl2:

I still haven't got an Ignition key so I took the steering column loose from the dash, removed the steering wheel and turnsignal switch and tomorrow (2 Nov 11) I will take the center of the column to a lock smith and have an ignition switch key made for it. (if I can find my snap ring pliers) to allow further removal of that top-most collar in the column, wish me luck) kafrompa

Just take out the door lock and have them make a key for that. Then you will have an ignition key as well.

I did that last week, had the door and trunk keys made BUT the ignition hasn't accepted either key. my only other option would be fabricating a whole switch and gauge panel BUT that would not contribute to the appearance of the original '71 Comet.

Took it to a licensed mechanic for inspection. eBay gives me 30 days to file a dispute if there is something seriously wrong with the engine or transmission, though they'll only accept the written analysis of a licensed mechanic.....no 'self diagnosis' allowed. Weird how protective I feel of her already. I walked away from the mechanic and almost felt like telling him if he hurt her - I'd be a very unpleasant person to deal with.

I told a mechanic some wonderous things before, and he made sure he didn't scratch the paint, turns out he didn't after that and he found I needed a bigger elec fuel pump, problem solved and still nice paint

She got a clean bill of health, minus the notation that the whole engine and bay could use a cleaning (gracias, captain obvious). Not a scratch on her, just grubby foot prints on the floor pan. All is right in my universe.

I dissassembled the steering column to get the ignition tumbler out and took it to a local locksmith to have a key made for the ignition, should have it back by next weekend. I've still got to replace the entire braking and steering systems and begin on the engine. It's a 200 cid in-line 6, 1 bbl Holley and C4 Auto trans. The Comet sat outdoors in a field scince summer of 2000 and I've still got a lot of small stuff to do on it. I will start a folder of before and after photos next week.... kafrompa
