I am looking for some trouble shooting advice. It should be simple but.....

It started with turning the car off and the oil light stays lit. I should say the oil light is off when the car is running but when I turn it off sometimes the oil light stays on. pull the key out and it is still on. Then yesterday I turned the ignition off pulled the key out and the car was still running. wouldn't turn off. ( I know, you just can't stop a Ford) I think it is the ignition switch. not the key switch but the actual ignition switch the key operates. I just don't want to do the start replacing stuff till it is fixed deal. does this sound correct? Or could it be the key switch? Any ideas?

    TIA
    Dave

Hey Dave If It Still Won't Shut Off When You Try It Again Unplug The Switch And See If It Stops If So It's To Be The Switch But You May Want To Try And Adj It Also

Well since it did this the other day it has turned off when I turn it off. But the oil light remaining lit has been an ongoing thing. You know how when you turn the ignition to run just before start and the light comes on to let you know it works? That's how it acts... sometimes. you have to be careful that when you turn the car off it isn't lit or elase it runs the battery down. I am thinking these two are related.

You say adjust it? I am not sure I ever heard of adjusting an ignition switch. can you explain please?

The Switch Sits On Top Of The Steering Column And Has 2 - 7/16 Nuts That Can Be Loosened, The Switch Housing Is Slotted ,however You Will Have To Drop The Column Down To Get To Them As They Are Right On Top Of The Bracket. You May Be Able To Spray A Little Wd/40 On The Shaft And Tweek It A Little To Correct Your Problem Good Luck Ron

this isn't just the key coming out, I'm talking about turning the ignition off and taking the key out and it keeps running.

I had a bad starter relay that would keep the oil light on with the key off. The I terminal backfeeds 12 volts through the ignition switch to the coil during cranking. The relay was broken inside not breaking the contact to the I terminal after cranking sometimes.

That is the solenoid switch. I went through 3 of them at an Advance, and two of them had that same problem. Seems the internal contacts are touching due to bad manufacture, or electrical short. Replace the switch.

That is causing the oil light? would that also cause the car to keep running? after turning the ignition off? I was thinking the two were related but they may not be.

It will cause it to keep running with the ignition off. As far as the oil light.....another problem, I would think. Check the sending unit and the wiring up to the dash, and see if it is shorted, melted or broken.

if the oil light "sometimes" comes on and stays on...then it would be a short in the wire....chances are that the wire touched and is grounding out...when you hit a bump or slam the door and something it just comes apart a little and goes out....im no electrical genius....but maybe the short was what fried the ignition?

sounds like they are connected somehow..... must my $.02

Both are intermittent. with the oil light Nothing moves, as soon as the key is turned off it will light if it's going to. without opening doors and without the light being on when it is running. with the Car keeps running bit, it did that once and and again immediatly after but later that day no problems. The car is just sitting idling here. it is mostly apart so no driving is involved. I just start it from time to time to keep the battery up and keep the engine in good shape.

I have the same problem with the car staying running. At the time when the switch works I have 6.1V at the coil. When the key doesn't work I have 12 V at the coil and the Ig terminal is hot on the solenoid. 12V. I am off today for a new solenoid.
