i was thinking about putting explorer 8.8 in my 77 maverick. i was just wondering how well does it fit? i was going to use a tire with 5.5 backspacing. Im trying to avoid cutting one down, that's why i'm not going with the 9.

I used one but had it cut down 1" under factory length and run 4.5" BS you'll have to run way more than that to leave it stock

First off, tires do not have back spacing, only wheels. Why do you want to change out your 8" differential? Is it just to install a wider axle to achieve some added wheel back spacing? What wheel width and diameter are you planning? I believe an 8" wheel width is about the maximum on our cars.

What are your plans for wheels and tires on the front of the car?

Just some additional food for thought!

My wheels are 15x10 with a 4.5" BS with a short/wide tire 265/50R15 had to do inner fender massaging, and roll the fender well lip.
But like I said I had the explorer axle cut down to 1" under the factory maverick length to do this, the explorer is 3" wider than the maverick length so it was cut down a lot, but I have seen one with a mustang or cougar one in it with out cutting it down but had to cut all the brackets off and weld leaf perches on and run a lot of back space, just not probable.

You should have been able to fit those tires without doing anything. I tried that size but they were just too short to suit me. I went to a 295/50 and used the 265's on my utility trailer.

yeah I know but I was already having the rear-end cut down & the deeper the back wheel the better IMO lol
