Hello all, I am in need of a proportioning valve for a front disc/rear drum setup with '74 comet brakes in the front and a '71 Maverick rear brake setup. Are there any aftermarket/interchangeable/universal valves I can use? Also, does anyone know where I can get the big axle (hub?) bearings for a '71 Maverick setup and what would work? Also, and here's a long shot, but I need '74 spindles as well. They're in semi-rough shape and I would like a nicer set just in case. Thanks, Nick
You got it, Let me know how much shipping is tomorrow. Do you want to do a money wire through walmart or by mail? However you want to do it is fine.
I put disc's on the front of my 73, close to six years ago, I left the factory drum/drum distribution block in place, my brakes work just fine, but I did replace the master cylinder with a 74 disc/drum master.
ford used many different valves but I have no idea what difference is internally other than the spring. part of the function of this valve is to sense a pressure loss to either the front or back and move the spool valve to block flow to that low pressure side. drum/drum master cylinders verses disc/drum master cylinders should only have residual pressure valve(s) on the drum sides. disc calipers need the slightest amount of fluid to return with the caliper piston for brake release where drum set ups have springs to retract the shoes upon release. I have heard guys on this site say they have used standard drum/drum master cylinders after converting to front disc and I have heard guys say they change master cylinders to a disc/drum master cylinder as part of the conversion. PERSONALLY I am going to change the master cylinder during my conversion as that is where the bore size change and residual pressure valves are located. I am most of the way through my conversion but not finished and have not driven it yet.
also interesting to note I saved the "valve" off a 1970 I had and converted to disc and there was no safety spool it was just a distribution block. That car I pulled the donor cars master cylinder and valve off and used for the conversion. For myself I generally use factory engineered parts and systems figuring there was a reason they spent the additional money to build it that way...........
So from what I'm gathering a new master cylinder ('73-'74 era) would be the wisest choice and most cost effective choice
Thats my opinion and rockauto would also be my choice although summit has been very competive with rocks prices on alot of items I purchased recently
