I just bought a 73' v8 Maverick; I want to swap the drum front brakes ... can someone tell me if this http://goo.gl/Q1QJPZ will fit and if it does, what else will need?
IF you use the above mentioned spindles and caliper brackets they fit fine, I have same on my '72 using '69 Torino spindles... Note the 1970/later vs '68-'69 spindles use different bearing size and tie rod pin sizes, either is fine but kit must match the year spindle... Assuming correct bearing & tie rod, spindles from '68-'71 Fairlane, Torino, Falcon, Ranchero, Cyclone & Montego are same as '68-'73 Mustang & Cougar...
I'm not very familiar with this to put it simple If I want to install 70-73 mustang brakes I must buy only the spindles ??
Mainly you need the spindles and caliper brackets, can also be from '70-'71 Torino, Cyclone etc as they are same as '70-'73 Stang/Cougar, everything else is available as a Kit... I bought mine from http://www.chockostangclassicmustang.com They also sell on ebay...
Thanks men!!! I was really thinking about it because no one put it in that perspective. In fact it's simpler that I thought. I noticed that my maverick (its a v8) has some kind of solenoid in the carburetor. what it is ???
The one thing not mentioned that complicates the swap, is the the original drum brake hard line fittings will be different from the disc hoses... Also same issue with connecting to disc brake master cylinder ... You'll either need to get a inverted flair tool and repl fittings with ones of correct size, or maybe use adapters... I did a little of both on my Comet... BTW The soft lines to calipers will need to be relocated somewhat compared to where the drum brake lines mounted... I have a '69 Torino with discs so I had a handy reference to see exactly how the factory did it...
I heard about the issue with the hoses so I was kinda aware. But I will take note anyways and what does that "fast-idle dash pot " do ?
There are two types and one isn't for fast idle, only if it has a electrical connection... The electrical type increases idle, then drops out with ign switch off to reduce possibility of run on(dieseling)... In some versions may only be active if vehicle has A/C, compensates for load of compressor... The second allows a delayed throttle closing to prevent stalling under panic braking, or could be a emissions item... These are sort of like a shock absorber that delays throttle closing fully by a second or two, with age are almost 100% defective... I've been tossing these for years...
