I want to convert from power steering to manuel steering. What would need to be done? Do i have to swap out the whole suspension or?
You might want to take a look at how you are going to run the water pump when you remove the power steering pump. I believe you will need a water pump pulley and crank pulley
i run my car without power steering but i have the crank and water pump pulley that i used when it had power steering. haven't come across problems yet
Does anybody have any pics of the difference between power and manual steering parts? Im not that knowledgable when it comes to suspension
the power steering is gonna have a hydraulic cylinder on the rack, manual will not. as far s boxs and stuff goes i do not have pictures
as far as the steering parts go.. what years fit what? I have a 76 that I am looking at converting as the steering has gobs of play in it now , but I didn't want to buy parts twice once i convert over.. like the moog k8245 idler arm.. it looks like power or manual it takes the same arm??? but that's only for 75 on up?
Have you adjusted the control valve centering spring yet? 71gold bought a very nice Maverick from the crusher a couple years ago that was all over the road when driving. He adjusted the centering spring and now it drives like a new car. http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/repair/steering_02.html
No.. currently I am driving around with the pump, hoses and cylinder removed.. when you turn the wheel side to side there is play in the idler arm and in the stud that comes out of the control valve... I bought the idler, just didn't want to install it to later find out the manual center link isn't compatible... but so far from what i have researched.. the 75+ cars there is no difference in the center link... =
They are 3 different idle arms...70-72, 73-74, 75-77 and two different Pitman arms...manual steer and power steer. The slave cylinder was not designed to be used without the pump...it can't take the task of pushing or pulling the center link manually. It needs the control valve to use hydraulics to do the work.
OK.. so the idler arm doesn't care if its power or manual.. it just matters on the year of the drag link? the MooG K8245 just has a hole in the center to where the drag link would have to have the stud to go through it....
Have you converted to manual steering yet? I converted mine 2 years ago using a power-to-manual steering control valve eliminator. Sure made the conversion a lot easier and less expensive if your other components are good. I purchased my eliminator at Autokrafters. I've linked their catalog. Part #RP 27483 page 59. http://www.autokrafters.com/images/MV_13_Pt2.pdf
thanks for the link... I already bought the center link and pitman arm from just suspension.. and hopefully will be installing it this weekend..
