distributor upgrade electronic IGNITION help

    ok hello again ford owners im here to ask you guys a question , im own a 1970 ford maverick it has a 200 inline 6 whit dual distributor vacum and points ignition , i was reading a maverick manual and i found the
    1974 6 cyl 200 inline the same engine like mine has a electronic ignition distributor !!! so the question is this can i buy a new distributor for the 1974 and put it to my 1970 so in that way i upgrade the ignition to an electronic one ? or is impossible ? the thing is i have to buy a new one anyways. autozone has remanufactured ones so hat do you guys think>>......:lolup:

    The 74 used a Duraspark I...75-up used Duraspark II. The Duraspark II is a better choice

    If you can do some rewiring it isn't that difficult... Possibly a article here on the forum that gives info??

    You'll have to also add the module that fires the coil, plus the coil specs are different... By it's self, the DurasSpark distributor is useless...

    this is the regular autozone distributor points type and the onde behind is the electronic one

    You also need the wiring harness between the two

    Would be a good idea to check for conversion info on net, Bronco & Mustang with 6cyl are popular topics..

    Also the Petronix unit that's mounts inside your orig dist are very popular...

    The DSI or DSII can be a great upgrade to your small block six's drivability. There's a good reference schematic on Mustang Steve's site:

    DSI uses points style Dist. cap and wires - DSII goes to bigger cap and better wires. , the Ford ignition module can be used or the GM HEI trigger is popular with even simpler wiring . OEM coil could be used if you retain the "pink" resistance wire (Red/Grn?) but you need honest 12V at the module and a 12V style coil is recommended.

    ok Powerband thank you now i know is possibly and very simple now i thinking about im in a dilema if i do the hotspark convertion the cost is this $140 dollars the kit and if i do the 1975 distributor the cost will be $50 dollars but then the module $30 , and the wiring $10 ,new spark cables ,rotor and distributor cap $40 so depents no on autozone availavility but thanks for every one you guys are awesome

    The $30 module is not going to last long before it goes bad. Get the better module...money well spent.

    the thing now is this , i buy the regular one the original point type but now the problem is this it does not fit all the way in i rotate the engine and s till not come all the way in autozone says is the correct one the original remanufactured but way it dosent fit?

    It bothers me that you say you rotated the engine. Either you replace the distributor exactly as removed or you begin at #1 top-dead-center.

    Have you compared the two distributor's? Are they the same length, etc.?

    Sometimes when you replace a distributor you have to stab the engine several times and get the shaft rotated just right to seat it properly. I've even had to grind or sand a distributor's base down for a proper fit.

    Just though I'd weight in since I finished mine yesterday. I used the distributor from a '78 Fairmont(Same distributor, just easier to come by in my case), MSD Blaster coil and a StreetFire CDi box. The CDi uses the factory "Pink"(red and green) wire as a trigger, no a source. It gets power straight from the battery. Wiring took all of 10 minutes, no cutting the original harness, so I can drop a points dist back in in a bind. As for the fitment, I had to(to quote Hotrock) stab it a few times and even then it took some pressure to get it in all the way. Make sure your gears are aligned and give it a good shove. Should slide right in. Don't force it, just give it some pressure. I also covered mine in vasoline(out of assembly lube) rather than just oil which I think helped.

    For what it's worth I strongly believe the StreetFire box is money well spent.

    I have to agree with switching to a Petronix conversion, it eliminates the need for a Dura spark box .
    to make a point fire into a electronic is what the Petronix is all about! it is simpal and eliminates lots of wiring problems!

    I sure like mine, though I got everything pictured plus a new set of plug wires for $65...

    If anyone ever doubted the output, it makes far more voltage than a Duraspark...
