Use a vacuum gauge to tune with...not timing light

Is it a six cylinder? If you open the hood, do you smell gas?

If so, it may be heat soak which causes the fuel in the carb to boil off. The fuel pump has to refill the carb before it will start. My car use to do this all the time. Some people have made a heat shield over the exhaust. I just lived with it.

I had the same problem with the 302. I picked up a composite carb spacer from Summit to insulate the carb from the intake, and it solved the problem.

How is tuning with a vac gauge vs timing light going to cure a hot start issue?? Generally that's a carb problem, float too high, leaking power valve, or maybe a slightly leaking needle valve that allows fuel level rise during heat soak... All these can create a flooded condition, which probably 95% of the time is the root of a hot start issue...

'Sounds like the fuel is boiling in the float bowl and causing a flooding condition which results in having to crank the starter for a longer than usual period of time before the engine starts. Today's gasoline has a lower boiling point than gasoline from decades ago because of ethanol. If this problem started recently, I wonder if your last fill-up was with E-85 or something.

Is your carb spacer plastic, composite, aluminum?
