Hi everyone I'm Andrew and I'm located about 50km from Melbourne in Australia. I have recently bought a 1970 Maverick 2 door; with a 200ci six cylinder and 5 speed manual gearbox. It was imported in Australia about 3 years ago with a 302 Windsor and 4 speed gearbox but the importer sold those separately. (Was originally a red 200ci 3 speed model according to the vin number) I bought this car to do up for my wife as I have loved the Maverick styling ever since I first saw them in Argentina in 2005. They are a unique car in Australia and I'm looking forward to correspondence with all of you but particularly those here in Australia as I have to fix a few things to get it to registration spec over here. Love seeing all the photos and write ups and on your cars and look forward to adding a few more of my own as I go along cheers
They are avail over here but are not common. There are many variations of in line six cylinder engines available here including the current Ford Falcon FG Turbo engine I would love to put a 302 Windsor v8 in (as I have a spare engine here) but my wife wants to drive it to work everyday and it's a 100 kilometre round trip. The cost of fuel here is around $1.30 AUD per litre so she's worried about fuel economy. Will probably just concentrate on getting it registered in Australia as it is for now and look at upgrades later when finances allow.
Welcome Andrew, it's good to see you on here mate. I hope you had some luck with your seat belts. I saw this car advertised a while ago, it looks like a tidy example with loads of potential. If there's anything I can do to help you have my phone number mate. Lots of great folk on this forum that are only too happy to help as well. Good luck, and I'm glad your wife loves it too. Ps: loose that xf wheel and source a maverick sports wheel.lol
I know Ivan; pretty average wheel lol. Few things I've got to do to get it registered. Do the seat belts have to have AS2596 conformity for rego up there. Still trying to find out in Victoria. Also I think I have to change the rear side flasher lenses from red to yellow and I want to wire indicators into the rear clear lenses as the previous owner put ugly LED indicators underneath the tail light assys. Also want to go to slotted discs on front. They are same as Mustang aren't they? What size wheels do you have on yours? I was looking at the Showster Magnum style 17x8 rims on ebay but was wondering if clearance would be an issue?
In Qld the belts have to be retractable fronts with AUS safety standards tagging, (most new belts available from REPCO and the likes will meet specifications). Check with your transport compliance in vic about the amber lights, as in qld pre 1971 don't have to change to Amber. My rear lights don't have and Amber or white, although I do have a set of mustang reverse lights in the beaver panel. Indicators and tail/brake lights are sequential. I'm pretty sure discs are the same as early stang and maybe xr-xt falcon. Just take one as a sample to make sure of the offset. My wheels are 17x8 all round with a 4&1/4" backspace. 275/40/17 rear and 225/45/17 fronts with no problems. Hope this helps you a little Andrew
I always wondered what a comet bumper would look like with a maverick grill and hood. its not as bad as I thought. if I didnt know any better I probably wouldve assumed it came that way nice car to sdart with. if you put a roller v8 and a 5 speed manual you will get better gas mileage than that inline I know weve done it and doubled our gas mileage from the old inline
Pardon my ignorance but which is the C Thanks Ivan. The wheels i'm after have a 4 1/2" backspace so i should be right. How did you get 275 tyres on 8" rims though?!?!
I they are a little bit stretched and I would prefer 9" but I'm always playing with different combos.mi run a set of 16x10 chaser style steel wheels with 4 3/4" with 16mm spacer with a265 tyre, will try to get a 295/50/16 under it in the near future. You may need to run an 8mm spacer with the 4 1/2" depending on tyre size. ( the bigger the tyre the better!)
