Sorry if this has been answered before, but what rear end will fit in a Maverick? Wanting to change it to a 5 Lug. Thanks in advance, everybody on this board has been more than helpful to me. This is the best forum around.
Any Ford 8-inch from a Maverick/Comet, and any Ford 8-inch from a Granada/Monarch. I am referring to direct bolt-in with no modification.
Others have put Ford 8.8-inch and 9-inch rearends in their Mavericks. They'll have to chime in to tell you their experience. Most 9-inch rears are too wide for the Maverick. The exception is the Lincoln Versailles, and the Ford Bronco which has the wrong bolt pattern. I'll let the experts elaborate on all that.
I took a 8.8 from a 74 Maverick and installed it into my 70 Maverick,. Put vehicle on jack stands under frame and let the rear end hang. Put a floor jack under rear pumpkin to support axle assembly at the same time we used a floor jack between the "U" bolts on leaf springs when removing/installing bolts to relieve pressure off of rear shackle bolts. You will have to adjust jacks up or down till the bolts come out. Then remove front leaf spring bolts.
I did not need to modify it and have no idea what was done, it bolted right in though, I did need the springs. I don't know where it originated from.
I think people are doing the short tube mod. That is were you get the short side tube and axle from another 8.8 and swap it out for the long side. I'm not sure what the end result measuement is. Maybe it came out of a Mustang?
My 9 inch rear came out of a Granada Ghia which had the 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern same as the Maverick. These also came in some Mercury Monarchs - had nothing to do with the car having a 6 cylinder or V8 engine - some got them - most didn't. Bolted in my 69.5 right in place of the original tiny rear - just a bit wider overall but no problems with the fitment of the rims or tires
It does not have bolt on rear cover, the tag says 8.8 on it though...was told the Ford had two different 8.8 rear ends...not true?
I just swapped a 8.8 into my 71, pretty easy swap. No narrowing required 8.8 has factory 4.10 gears 31 splines axels and trac loc posi with disc brakes.
