Hi there! New to the forum, I searched around and I hope I'm posting this in the right spot. I'm new to the world of working on cars (something I've wanted to do for ages!), so I'm not really familiar with everything yet. That said, I bought a 76 Maverick as my first ever project car, and after doing research online I'm still kind of confused as to whether or not it'd be worth it to put a 4 barrel carb/intake on the 302 v8 engine? Gas mileage isn't a concern of mine, this car is there for me to have fun in and learn how to work on, so anything that'll give the car a performance boost is what I'm after. I'd love input/advice! My only request would be to explain things to me like I'm 5 though, as I'm still learning terminology and stuff. Thanks!
... "this car is there for me to have fun in and learn how to work on." I would suggest driving the car a little to get the feel of it, check out any issues it may have. then decide on where you would like to go with your build. Frank
Welcome to the site from northeast Ohio!!! I also agree with Frank and Crazy Larry. I suggest buying new components as opposed to something from a swap meet etc. At your level of automotive knowledge, you do not need the extra difficulties that may come with used parts especially carburetion. I suggest the following three items plus gaskets. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/wnd-8020wnd/overview/make/ford https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-m08600vs/overview/ https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g3001/overview/ Have fun!!!
I think Hotrock nailed it. That is exactly what I would have recommended. I think the Weiand Stealth is one of the best intakes for the small block daily driver. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Woo! You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for the feedback! Yup, I've driven her around a bit and she's pretty healthy for being as old as she is. Definitely has more 'oomph' than I'm used to (I've driven 4 cylinder commuter cars or giant Cadillacs almost exclusively). I've been trying to do my due diligence and read up about the benefits of performing the swap, but the only thing I've taken away from that research for sure is that I should stay away from a 2bbl to 4bbl adapter, whatever that is. So my main question is, if I swap out the intake manifold, carb, and air filter, where will the benefit be most noticeable? Standard acceleration? Higher top-end speed? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but since y'all were nice enough to answer, figured it can't hurt to follow up with the silly stuff if it helps me learn. Thanks again!
No question is a dumb question! That's what the forum is for -- help fellow enthusiast/owners solve their problems. No one knows everything -- but there is enough knowledge here to eventually figure most anything out. Welcome to the forum!
if you decide to go 4 bbl...may want to bump the cam up with new lifters to take advantage of the extra fuel/air...you'll be half way there when you pull the intake...
4 barrel swap was the best thing I ever did to my car. Took a bit of tuning to get the carb setup right. The parts posted previously is close to what I am running now. You will get even more benefit if you open up the exhaust a bit. Mine still had the stock system and made jump in improvement when I switched to duals.
