I have had these pictures on my site for a while now http://www.maverick.to/shelby.html John B. got these pictures and other Shelby info after contacting several people. http://www.maverick.to/np-foreignmav4.shtml Those pictures have also been in Mustangs and Fords
Tom, (settle down, buddy! ) I'm just curious, do you just not believe the story? Inquiring mind, Rick (backing away slowly)
Tom: I got those pictures from Rick Kopec, the national director of Shelby American Automobile Club. He had received them as part of a collection of material donated to the club by the estate of Mr. Eduardo Velazquez, the former president of Shelby de Mexico. Additional confirmation of the Shelby Maverick story comes from articles in the Shelby Registry, and interviews with Mr. Velazquez (see Stefan's post, or his main Maverick site). Additionally, some 2 or 3 years ago, while attending a nephew's wedding in Ontario, Canada, I found myself seated across from a retired gentleman from Michigan who shared with me that he had been an engineer with Ford for over 20 years. I mentioned that I was restoring and modifying a Maverick, and asked him if he was aware that there had been some Shelby Mavericks built in Mexico. He responded that, in fact, he'd been one of 6 or 7 engineers flown down to Mexico by Ford to evaluate this car for consideration as a potential new addition to the Ford line-up. Unfortunately at this point there only existed the one prototype, and by the time the Ford guys got there some over zealous "test pilot" had lunched the engine in the beast. The Ford guys went back without ever getting to drive the car, and for reasons that he never clarified (and perhaps didn't know), Ford decided not to build the car themselves. Personally I found that wedding chat the most exciting piece of evidence to the Shelby Maverick story, and proof enough, when added to the other evidence, that "yes Virginia, there is a Shelby Maverick". I sure would like to find a surviving one though, wouldn't you? Sincerely; John B
