Hey, I have a 1970 Maverick that really has no stoping power at all. I've done searches on the board and haven't really found a legitamate answer to a front disc brake conversion. Can you guys please help me out? Thanks.

Properly maintained drum brakes should have no problem stopping your car. I have drums on my 74 and they stop the car no problem ...

I put '76 discs on my 70, mainly 'cause I needed new drums, pads, and wheel cylinders. Did the disc conversion for about the same price.

i find that when i am going down the track at almost 100mph.. it is a little hair raising sometimes. i am sure that i need to redo all the brake lines.. the drums are all done.. i have new cylinders in there and all new pads.

but sometimes its a little squirely.

i have 4 wheels drums as well

I hope no one is saying that drum brakes are as safe as pads and rotors?

We are saying that drums are sufficient to stop our light cars .. I can lock the drums on my car no problem. Discs just don't suffer from high temp brake fade like drums do ...

If the original poster has no stopping power with drum brakes he needs to fix them ... not necessarily replace them with discs ...

I agree 100% that he needs to fix the brakes. However if anyone has the chance to switch to rotors they should.

Its not that I have no stopping power, It's just that I'd rather have the thought in my mind that I have disc brakes. Imagine some stop and go traffic, or maybe a trip to the mountain one night, and my brakes happen to heat up, I wanna have the security that my brakes are going to stop me if i jam them. Disc Brakes are always going to have better stopping power then the Drums. So I guess the swap is pretty straight forward.

Exactly. Why spend a bunch of money rebuilding the entire drum system (inferior) when you can convert to disc for about the same cost?....
