I have a 1974 maverick that missfires. have done tuneup, compression checks. every thing appears normal. I have been tolled that I need a valve job. I wonder if resurfacing will help? Years ago we would put Rislone down the carb of a warm engine to geta rid of carbon deposits. I wonder if that would work without damaging the engine. It only has 78,000 miles on it.

youve checked the timming as well

are you still running points or some kind of electronic ignigtion?

I think a little more diagnosis work may still be called for

    Welcome to the forum.

Does it miss all of the time? Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

Doubt if you need a valve job if a complete compression test has been done and passed.

The car still has the original distributor with point. Timing has been set to factory specs.

    Hi,
as Ray said...if a complete compression test has been done and passed...
    it's not a valve.
has the car been sitting for a long time?
is this...missfire through the carb. or tailpipe?
or is it more like a ...skip?

    ...(y)...

It is a skip and not a backfire.

An intermitant skip is fairly normal for this engine, as the #1 and #6 cyl tend to run leaner than the rest of the cyl thus creating a "lean misfire".

I found two vaccuum leaks which have been fixed and the car runs great, however now the dash pot sticks and keeps the idle speed high. I need to free up the dash pot or replace it, but I am told that the dashpot is no longer available

You should still be able to get a dashpot.

My 200 dosen't skip... when I had it in my '69.5 with the stock exhaust it was so smooth and quiet it was hard to tell the car was running sitting at a red light. It's a '71 engine with 31,000 original miles.

macenfield, I would strongly recommend swapping to an electronic ignition. Even if you just put in a Pertronix or something, it's well worth it.
