I know now that you can not buy a new tank for a 69.5 and 70 maverick, because its the drop in type. But what about buying a newer year maverick tank with straps and modify it to work in my 70'? Has any one done this and hard was it? Thanks for any infor
I think I would get the measurements on the hole and get a fuel cell that was a close fit, and then fill the surrounding area with some sheetmetal. It would work and look fine if it was done right....
I'm assuming you are talking about buying the 19 gallon from the 74-up mavs to replace.... some have done this, i agree with craig, they're too big for ME, but I did this instead... http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=35490
Nice work, but can that Mustang tank be used as a drop-in like the 69.5-70s require? In the past I considered the fuel cell option. In the end I just took the tank out and sloshed around sealer inside. That was about 17 years ago and it's still holding up.
MY convertible project is a 70 model (69.5 actually) and I will be putting in a mustang tank. I have measured the mustang tank and it is longer front to back and not as wide side to side. So it will take some fabricating to get it in. However I have a metal brake and I seriously doubt it will take that much fabrication. Hey Barry, why dont you stop by CJ's, pick up a mustang tank, come on down, and we can install it and write a tech article.
I removed my tank well due to the sides all rotting away and am replacing it with a 16 gallon Jaz oval track cell. This also gave me a chance to have a centered tank so dual exhaust being tight on the driver's side will not be an issue anymore. I already posted some other photos in different post here: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=49333
That's what I was talking about. You could possibly even get one with the filler closer to the rear, and hook it up to the stock location.
