I know where there is a mid 70's pinto wagon. It is a V6 4 speed as far as I remember. I have read that some of these came with a 8 inch with 3.40 gears and a posi unit. I was wondering if this was true
Possible, can you read the door tag for the axle code? Maybe the tag is still on the rear end. Ratio is on the rear end tags.
Pinto 8" rears ONLY came with 3.40 and 3.55 gears. Now you just need to make sure it truly has an 8", and not some other rear. As for the 'posi' unit, my understanding is no Pinto ever came with one, but that they were common in Bobcats. Just because the Mercury cars were supposed to be a bit more upscale, so it was offered in Bobcats. You might just luck up! Good luck.
Standard in a V8, but you only get 3.00 gears. The V6 is your best bet in a Stang 2. 3.40 and 3.55 gears are the norm with a V6. Don't know about the I4 cars. They got the gears, but limited slip may not have been an option.
I'm wanting to find some better gears and a trac loc for the mav but I don't want to buy them new. My plan was to get the 3rd member and swap it into my housing
The trac loc i have waiting to be installed in my mav came out of a mastang II . I have seen mII with 3.40 / 3.55 open .This is the only one I have found with trac loc not to say that they not out there . You may also check the early Troino wagons with the towing package I found one years ago with trac loc .
I want to find soms gears for my maverick too! How can i tell if the donor car has the trac loc rearend?? Thanks pops
Both wheels turn in the same direction...single traction one wheel will turn in the opposite direction. This is done with the wheels off the ground
So if I have it on the ground, and it's not track lock, i'll only be able to do donuts? Sounds like it shouldn't even move
Pops, They used to be everywhere... Not so much now. Look for 8" rears in: Pintos Bobcats Mustang 2 The Pinto 8" only came 3.40 or 3.55, but Ford says none were ever limited slip. The Bobcat 8" was same as Pinto, however limited slip was an option. Not standard. The Mustang 2 came with 3.00 gears only behind a v8. No other optional gears. HOWEVER, the nice thing about the v8 M2 is that limited slip was standard with the v8. The v6 came with 3.40 and 3.55, and limited slip was optional. I have only looked specifically at 2 or 3 v6 M2s, but everyone I have seen was limited slip. The I4 was 3.40 or 3.55, but I have no idea if limited slip was available. Old Fairlanes, Torinos, and Rancheros were common with 3.25 gears. I have no idea how common limited slip was though. I have seen the 3.25 most often in Rancheros. The cars most often had 2.79s and 3.00s. I6 and SBF cars got 8" rears. When you got over 302 cubes, they had 9". Personally I would hope for a Bobcat myself. Get the tail lights and a 3.55 limited slip if you are real lucky. If you don't find that, then your next best bet is a sporty v6 M2 with that setup. Worst case, you could find a v8 M2 for the diff, and a Pinto for the 3.55, then combine the two into one. Also, the best way to tell exactly what you are looking at is to crawl under the car and wipe off the tag on the front of the housing. What you will see on the tag is two lines of numbers/letters. The top line will start with a digit very close to the bolt hole in the tag. Then there will be a large gap to the next digits on that top line. They are so far apart that it looks like it doesn't make sense, but there will be 3 digits spread out that represent the gear ratio. If the "(" is the end of the tag, and the "O" is the bolt hole, a tag will look like: Open rear, non-limited slip, using 3.55 as the example gear: (O 3._______55_) Limited slip 3.55 gear: (O 3.____L__55_) Make sense? There is a large gap between the first number of the ratio and the last two numbers, and the gap will have an "L" for limited slip, no "L" for open. The "____" marks are not there, I just had to use them here for the post to show a gap. Here is a 2.79 open Maverick tag: (O 2._________79_) 3.40 open Pinto: (O 3._________40_) Hope this helps. Stang 2 is probably your best chance nowadays.
I THANK YOU soooooo much for the information!!! this will make my search and find mission a lot easier. again I THANK YOU! pops
Trac-Loc Save your gas and buy one rebuilt. Every hot rodder is looking for these. And every salvage yard knows what they have. Too rare for an easy find. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Or, have one built by a local shop with your pumpkin. IMHO. Rick
I don't want to insinuate that "rare" parts are growing from trees, but you can find these particular items if you look, and the yards don't much care what they are, as long as they get paid. I gave 75 bux for a 9" Granada rear at a local yard. They looked it up on the puter, it said to charge 75, so they did. They could care less if it was an 8" or 9". A local guy here sells entire Stang2 and Pinto rears for 60 bux. He won't sell just the chunk, but who cares. The Pinto rear was long gone when I looked, and I haven't gotten around to checking the Stang2s, but they had rears last time I was there. So I don't know that I'd call these parts rare, or call the yard operators informed. Point is that you may or may not get lucky, but you have to try.
