The 76-77 tank fits the 72? Are the straps and everythng else the same? How many gallons does each hold?
The 75 to 77 tank is 19 gallons. The 71 to 74 tank is 15 gallons. You will need longer straps for the bigger tank.
I did mine with the same straps, just longer strap bolts. Worked fine . The vent on the top is different from 72 to 76, so u'll need one of those or a way to fab up ur old one. Good Luck!
I re-used my sender on my 71. Not sure if the 74 is the same, but I'm sure someone will chime in. Or The part numbers might match if you can find them for sale online...
If you use any sender other than the 75 and up one, you'll get a false reading. My car will say 1/2 tank when I only have 5 gallons left, and I have the 19 gallon tank. I'm using a NOS 73 sending unit.
Ah! Good Point! I never put my brass float back on, so my gauge doesn't work at all Definitely pumps the gas tho..
I'm using a 74 unit in mine and it reads spot on. If you look at the 74 tank it's almost identical in height to the 76, just the width is different. So there should be no issue. But the 71-73 tank would not be the same case. Picture from Jeff's site comparing the 2.
Do any of you guys happen to have pics of what you have to do with the vent when using the later tank in a 72?
71-74 tanks are all the same. I always thought mine was good, but I've found out different... The Ford part number for the vent is E7D2 9B593A, they snap into the new tanks, then you just hook them to the hose.
I always thought the 74 was different, well from reading the stuff on here. Thanks for the info though :Handshake Replacing the sender should always go with a tank swap. But I put in the 74 one that I had and it reads perfectly, So i'm gonna use it till it goes out. Then swap to a mustang/cougar unit.
Wow, that second picture reminds me of my 75 maverick! I guess what I'm asking is if the large tank will effect the ability to run tailpipes straight out the back and under the valance.
Yes you can run them under the valance, that second one has them under the bumper. Ford put the tailpipes in that area on a lot cars, like the torinos. I personally like it better when the tailpipes are more outboard
