I was on Craigslist and I can get the 5 lug rotors, lower arms and a few of the other parts off of a Mustang II front suspension for free. I just have to drive an hour and 20 minutes. He doesn't have the rack and pinion for it, but he has one for a Pinto. My question is, will the rack and pinion from the Pinto work on the Mustang II? My first guess would be that it should fit, but I don't know. Is it worth the drive in my little Toyota pick up? I would like for it to go on my '72 Grabber. Hopefully nobody gets it before I get my answer. Thanks in advance!

Are you calling a Rack & Pinion Kit a Mustang II front suspension or did it come off a Mustang II car?

74-up Pinto rack is the same as a Mustang II rack according to the Rock Auto site. Making a real Mustang II front end to fit is going to be a big job. A R&P kit will much easier.

some people don't mind the work and have some extra time..plus if you do..hey why not save an extra 1400 if you got the skills? i know i can't afford rack and pinion set up, as much as i would like it i think i would be starting to build a spare stroker instead.

I'm not saying it can't be done. If a person has the skill and equipment and time on their hands it can be done. I've read where people end up with a lot of bump steer and it takes a 10 acre field to turn around when they go reinventing the wheel

It's not like it's a direct bolt in...Mustang II front suspensions are loosely based on the Mustang II design, and most don't even use any genuine Mustang II parts. The part that the entire design revolves around is the cross member, and it's far from whats under a M II.

I had heard about a lot of people using the Mustang II rack & pinion steering, but had no idea about how involved it may or may not be to install. I just assumed if that many people were doing it, it wasn't that big of a job. I have 2 herniated collapsed discs in my back, so I won't be doing any of the work myself. I do have some money saved up to get some other stuff done(disk brakes, 9" rear), but it sounds like it may not really be worth it to do the rack & pinion steering.

You first have to graft the entire Mustang II crossmember and suspension into a Maverick in order to use the Mustang II or Pinto rack. Or buy an aftermarket Mustang II front cradle and weld it all in. It's not a bolt in. :naughty:

Look at my "images" and you will see the difference :)

I definitely didn't realize how much was involved. I guess I will be taking a pass on the rack & pinion steering.:( Oh well, not that big of a deal.
