Hey everybody I just pulled this off so I wanted to share just in case you guys who own 1976-1977 Mavericks think you don't have any alternative when your sending unit can't be rehabed. I purchased a new 1976 mustang 2 sending unit and did not use the tank seal that came with it. I put a new tank seal that came with my new tank for my 1976 and it fit and reads darn near as perfect as my original. No warranty because I gave up that I was asking if it was near the maverick size and stated that my intention was to try it on my Maverick. E bay 100.00 and thirty minutes of making some slight adjust ments and bingo we have it. Hope this helps someone:yahoo:

Thanks for the info! I bought a late model tank for my sprint and will try this on it. Thanks

My fuel sending unit from my '76 works at times. When it does, it's acurate. Then it just goes to empty. I have checked the wiring and cleaned out the connections, still does the same s**t. Does this mean I need a new one? Thanks to DeanBeard65 I know I have another option.

I had that problem but I checked the ground as I am sure most of you did. Then I drained the fuel down and took out the sending unit only to find the float/brass was rusted enough to let a hole start messing with my gauge. The brass float was cheaper than tracking down this unit. I also found a guy who fixes all sending units I will post all this info later or if you have questions PM me. Check this before you invest in this sending unit the guy on e bay is selling them for 100.00 dollars. If you find someone who has them cheaper please share with the rest of the community.

I don't know when I'll have time to mess with the fuel sending unit, at the time I am going with milage, more or less I know how much i travel weekly for work and that is how many gallons of fuel I put in the Maverick, I wish I could fill it up but I have a small leak comming from the top front passenger side of the tank. Does anyone know what there is in that location of the tank off a 1976 4dr Maverick? I wonder if brazing by a plumber can plug a foater.

Hey RatRod sometimes the gasket for your fuel vapor line can become very dry and rotted out here in the Southwest. It will make the tank leak when full. Another option is that the tank could have a small hole but I bet you will figure out that your rubber gasket for your fuel tank vapor line which is located up on top of the tank leaks when the tank is full. Does the motor run fine check and make sure that line is running to your cannister. Direct pressure with heat and a locking gas cap will also cause this thing to leak when it is perfectly fine. Hope this helps. Dean

I don't think it's a tiny hole since the car has very minimal rust but the possibility is always there. When I go to the parts store do I just ask for a vapor line gasket for gas tank? The engine runs fine, kinda hard on cold starts but that's because the choke isn't connected and once it starts it runs fine and starts fine all day. I havn't messed with it until i do the 2-barrel convert, i'm going full electric choke. The choke right now has that thermal vacuum + electric

Do you have a locking gas cap? I had to change out my locking gas cap to a regular maverick gas cap and that helped. When I did drop my tank I found that rubber piece was part of the problem. Karkrafters has the part for the 76-77 maverick but I would try your local parts store first. It is called a fuel vapor valve grommet Karkrafters has one on page 36 for 5.95 plus shipping. Remember dont believe it until you see it. Check and make sure that line is hooked up as I doubt you have a tank leak. The whole rotten thing is you have to lower your tank to check this grommet out first. They have the brass float for 5.95 each page 37 Hope this helps. Dean

$6 is worth buying it first, my weekend time is the only time I have to work on it so if the tank is coming down I'd rather be ready with it to install. I wouldn't want to remove the tank twice. I've had this problem since I got the car a few weeks ago, the original gas cap had no seal, it was just loose and I could see the vapors come out from there, I did buy a locking gas cap but never installed it, looked crappy. I just installed the regular twist chrome cap. Thanks DeanBeard65, you have been a lot of help, I really appreciate it.

Im sure you would rather hear this from him since he was the one who has done it, but I would remove the old one and compare the two. Im sure he had to bend the float line to make it read correctly. Just make the bend as close as possible to the original one so the float level is correct. :thumbs2:
