I cannot decide what to do. I like the idea of putting a t5 in, or is the time effort and cost not worth it. long story short i want my comet more "driveable" on the highway. Go for the 5 speed or spend the money on an overdrive unit. any thoughts?

I say put in what you want, T-5. There can't be that much difference in the cost and effort between a T-5 and AOD. Probably the clutch pedal and z-bar & brackets the main difference. IMHO.

I would go with the t-5. It's about the same amount of work with either set up, but the manual is way more fun!

The AOD is a much larger and heavier tranny than the C4.. additional parasitic HP robbing drag too.around town it might get worse mpg and might be better mpg if all you drive is highway..and for it to be as reliable as the C4 requires a lot of work. There are many articles here on the topic. And AOD spelled backwards is DOA ..for a reason. I have fantasies about getting a T5 for the highway milage, lack of mpg robbing torque converter, but I like automatic tranny because I drive with a coffee mug in one hand often... So that leaves the 2,000 dollar Gear Vendor behind my C4 but that aint gonna happen any time soon.. :) I will stick with my 2:79 rear gear and tall tires.

    been there, done that...:yup:

any HP numbers for that...additional parasitic HP robbing drag...statement?

a couple of zillion, Crown Vics, Mercury Marquis, trucks, vans and Mustangs running around with AODs...
being larger and heaver is rather mute being those cars, trucks and vans weigh about a 1,000 LBS. more than a Mav/Comet.
I have sold...over 50 AOD crossmembers to people on this board, some of us think it's a good idea...I've had a stock, hotrodded and a full race AOD in my car...

    ...:chirp:...

I have done an AOD and a T5 in my Maverick. The AOD swap was much easier. Especially if your car is not a manual trans car to begin with. Most people would probably prefer the automatic trans if they drive alot or use it as a daily driver. But for some spirited driving the T5 makes the car alot more fun.

I didnt really notice the added weight or parasitic loss of power with the AOD. Without putting it on a dyno and seeing the few HP difference on a graph you wont even know theres a difference unless you are drag racing. going from a c4 to AOD my car felt quicker off the line, I think because of the different gearing in the trans. The added OD was gret for long freeway cruises.

The T5 is more fun to me because I love to shift. If you dont love to shift then stay with an automatic. I drive a 93 5.0 mustang with a t5 everyday in traffic and all my cars are manuals. But its not for everybody, and makes it hard to have a donut and coffee on the way to work.

i have a two door that i put in a t-5 in with the help of this site already.(thanks to everyone that helped and supplied parts and sites i needed) with the four door i wanted to stay with the auto just because it kinda makes sense.(four door little geekier but i like that in that car) but would like to get a little better gas miileage.thats if the mileage is worth the added cost of the swap and the strain on the engine from the higher revs as compared to the c-4.its gonna be drivvin ALOT so i thought the difference in the extra gear would 'one save gas and two wear and tear on the engine with the higher fourth gear. what you guys think?
