i need a new motor due to a cracked block. since i am gonna put in a new motor i was wondering what i could pull one from and fit the best. i have a 72 mav with a 302 in it now . will most mustang motors exchange or no? what will i have to do about the trans? this is my first whole motor swap so i need some help. will the transmission need to be upgraded also? thanks for your time, Jim
Almost any 302 from '68 to around '80 is a direct swap, those that aren't would be a rear sump application like a Fox chassis Mustang, Fairmont etc... Just swapping to your orig oil pan, front timing cover, dist, etc fixes that... From '82-up most applications used a rear sump pan and the imbalance of the crank changed so the correct flywheel or flexplate must be used, along with the above parts... Starting '85 there are roller cammed 5.0 that can be made to work but have additional considerations...A search will net swap articles in the tech section...
I believe he already has a 302??? If so assuming the trans, rad, etc are in good shape nothing else is needed... Of course when talking about a old car, it always needs things we hope it doesn't...
I do already have the 302. I was gonna try for a fox body mustang motor but if i can manage it i think i might just have a cracked head. Would a generic mustang 302 be a good donor for a head?
If you're gonna replace just on head you need to find one with the same casting number. If your swapping both I would look for explorer heads (if you go this route make sure to check pushrod length, you may also have sparkplug/header/exhaust manifold clearance issues). e7's would still be a good upgrade from stock though without the plug clearance thing.
my point...he will have the rad. out, have it checked/flushed. may want to replace the...oil pump...while he has the motor out...
Already got a new radiator. I planned on having the motor on a stand and givin it a once over , cleaning everything and gonna repaint too.
