Not sure where to post this , excuse me if this is the wrong spot , put an e303 cam in my 302 and not sure if I can run my dist , it has a performance world 6002 dist / hei conversion , not sure what kinda gear it has , tried a search but it is unclear , some say you can run a stock gear with a Motorsport cam , not sure if it's cast or steel , can anyone shed some light on this

Steel cam requires steel or bronze gear... Seen a iron gear eaten by a stock HO cam and the E will be no different...

I suspect "stock" refers to the gears that are on the factory TFI distributors...

You can`t use cast gears on roller cams.

I tried to install the Ford Motorsports steel gear on the Boss 302 dual point distributor I used in my 71 Comet with a F-303 cam. Ruined the distributor shaft as the interference fit was so tight I couldn't get it on and aligned. Researched a bit and purchased Summit Racing MMA-29418 steel gear priced at $39.97 which was a lot cheaper than the Ford gear and easy to install. You had to heat slightly and then drill for the larger pin supplied. You will have to use a press to get the old gear off first.

Other option is to get a Duraspark dizzy for an 85 Mustang GT. That is what I run with my E303.

I believe only the 5 speed cars had the steel gear.

The carbed 5.0 '85 Stang 5-speeds were first to use a roller cam and last 5.0 to use Duraspark... Automatic used a flat tappet cam with TFI dist, this incl '84 as well... The '83 & '84 5.0 5 speed Stang were carbed and had Duraspark but used a flat tappet cam... All passenger car 5.0 from '86 on were EFI & roller cammed, so had TFI dist... the 5.0 F Series went to EFI in 85.5, but continued to use flat tappet cams into the early '90s... Blocks were roller cam ready...

You are aware you need an ignition module and conversion harness, right?

well yes and no lol. i knew i would prob have to run an msd 6al or something with a duraspark dist, which i didnt want to do ,i wasnt aware that i could use the suraspark setup completely, which is the recommeded way to go? msd is ewaasy but pricey, and bulkey, hard to make it look kinda stockish, how do i go about the duraspark complete way if its possible
