I have a 1988 302 out of a Mustang or so I am told. Replaced oil pan with front sump. Purchased a used 302 timing chain cover (so I was told) to move dipstick forward. Purchased a standard directional aluminum water pump. Purchased timing cover and water pump ARP bolt kit. First issue. To make timing cover fit had to slightly enlarge pilot holes to allow cover to be flush with engine. Second issue water pump missing bolt hole at very top. Pump has two holes where cover requires three. The rest of the pattern is correct. Third issue the bolts from kit are either to short or to long. I am guessing wrong water pump even though vender says it will fit 289, 302 and 351w. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'll guess you have wrong pump and/or bolt kit.

Water pumps between 1969 & 1970 differ, require different bolt kits. Also harmonic balancers & timing pointers are different. I've seen the late '80s/early '90s Crown Vic aluminum water pumps used(all are std rotation). I dunno if there are any differences.

I used the front dress, bolts etc and oil pan from my orig 302 on a '91 Mustang 5.0 without issue. Pump is a '70s std replacement.

Thank you. Good information. Was going to take pump gasket that aligns with cover to parts store and match to a pump with correct rotation I need as well as bottom hose placement (diver side).

Same bolt pattern as the water pump I have. The timing cover is different. The cover has three holes across the top for bolts and the pump only has two as your image shows E8DB87B2-0055-4369-B28E-FE5FE49DE47B.jpeg

Beginning '70 the top center hole isn't used, was used '69 earlier.

Ford lists same cover for both.

Do you have the metal plate that goes between the pump and timing cover?

Holding 1 water pump on with 4 different kinds of bolts has always seemed a little ridiculous to me. I learned after my first to always lay the bolts out in a pattern so I know where they need to go back.

Would of done that except three bolts broke and the original cover came off in pieces. Was changing it anyway to a front dipstick. Thus why I got a bolt kit which is wrong. I will proceed but thanks for your tips.

Yeah many of the vendors sell the 69/earlier as one kit fits all, not so...

Some bolts between the two are different lengths.
