right starter for 302?

    bought 4 starters for my 74 302 comet...3 speed..nose reach was 3/4 inch short. in the computer were the correct parts,,,i looked at the starter for an automatic..nose reach is 2 1/4 which worked out perfect..any one have this problem?? or does advance and A.Z. have their computer info incorrect???

    There are two different length noses with the standard shift having the shortest nose length.

    Yep, found this out the hard way many years ago. Bought a starter at the local parts house, kid behind the counter didn't even look up a part number for my manual trans application. Just grabbed one off the shelf and said "Here's the one you need". He had given me the longer-nosed part for an automatic and it broke about half the teeth off of the flywheel starter ring when I tried to start the car.

    the longer nose starter worked for my application..it was only 3/8 longer.with 3/4 depth left on the starter hole..factory 3 speed and matching #s of body/engine..74 Comet..soooo i dont know the answer to my own question....i cked some of my sons old mustang leftover cores they all had the longer nose..all i know is what works!

    Hmmm, I'd have to go look at my spare starters, I have ones for manual and auto trans. Could be i got the long vs. short nose bassackwards. Anywho, the wrong one can cause a lot of grief.

    jeez..now you guys got me all nervous about starters! i thought it was one choice and done. i wanted to get one of those fancy high cranking ones or whatever to make sure my car starts.
