I just had an interesting experience. I went to go start my 1969.5 Maverick and the starter would not deactivate and the engine wouldn't turn over. I pulled the key out of the ignition but that didn't do anything. It just kept going and the solenoid started smoking before we were able to get it turned off again. I don't think we really hurt anything and I hope the ignition switch is the only thing not working. So my question is will the 1970 ignition switch fit into the 1969.5?
Sounds like the starter solenoid is sticking. If I was going to throw parts at it...solenoid is cheaper and easier to replace
I second Jeffs thoughts, had the exact same thing happen on my 87 F-250. Cheap Autozone solenoid was the problem.
ON the solenoid, pull off the small wire closes to the battery cable. If the starter still spins, its the solenoid. If it doesn't, then your getting a 12v start signal from some source, most likely, the ignition switch. A 70 maverick is nothing like the dash mounted switch in the 69.5. You might look at a 69 mustang switch and see if they are the same.
Back in '84 I had a customer come in to the Albertsons I worked at here in Wichita Falls talking about a Maverick going across the parking lot by itself. Turns out it was mine. The solenoid had suddenly engaged and I had left it in first gear without the emergency brake on. Luckily it was late and parking lot was almost empty. Didn't hit anything. I use to carry a screwdriver to beat it with when sometimes it would engage the starter WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. That would make some noise. Turns out it was a wiring problem. But I went thru 5 solenoids before I found that out. Makes a cool (?) story now, not so much then.
