I have looked at a lot of posts so far but I can't find the problem that I am having with my car at the moment. I have a 1969.5 maverick with a 302 from a 1977 maverick. A few months ago my ignition switch went bad and I only got around to replacing it a week ago. While the switch was bad I tried to hot wire the car and did it wrong and that destroyed the ignition control module. I have replaced both but now the car will only turn over in when the key is in the start position. when in run the car dies immediately. I have power to the coil when the car is in run. I have heard this may be a ballast resistor wire problem but I am stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You can spend a great deal of time and effort chasing down electrical gremlins in old cars, or you can skip the hassle and get one of these: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-850021/overview/make/ford or one like it, the cheaper ones have cast steel gears and are not as durable as the more expensive ones with hardened bronze or forged gears. Good bang for the buck! It's a simple install too, you run a single 12v+ wire (not resisted or ballasted) from the key switch and 1 vacuum hose. I put one in a 65 Falcon 170 it delivered great reliability and noticeable performance gains. It was the real thing from Performance Distributors with hardened bronze gear and was over $400 I liked it so much, I got one for my Maverick motor too: 99 Explorer 5.0 bored .030 with lots of cool but mild goodies. This dizzy is one of the cheaper ones, but has a hardened steel gear. I don't know about durability yet, motor hasn't been started since building. Let us know what you find, and post lots of pics!
or you could pick up a rebuilt stock dist. for $50 at advance auto and put a pertronix in it... http://www.jegs.com/i/Pertronix/751/AC181/10002/-1 or you can just find the problem and fix it...
