I am no expert on engine swaps in mavericks so I need send these questions on to those familiar with the process. A good friend of ours is currently running 351 Windsor in his '74 Maverick. The car already has a 9 inch posi rear in it and the car is scary fast just the way it is. Now our friend as been given one of those offers he can't refuse. He can get his hands on a low mileage 5.0 engine and transmission out of a 2013 Mustang. He is just itching to swap out his 351 with the 5.0, but is not sure if it can be done. So here are my questions . Can it be done? Has anyone even attempted it? He is well aware the he would have to shave the shock towers, but what else would he have to do to make it work? And what about the computer system on the 5.0? What modifications would need to be done to make that functional? I think his plan is to run this Maverick on the strip and he's looking for all the ponies he can stuff under the hood and still be able to keep it street legal. Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

AFAIK he'll have to do a lot more than shaving as the modular/coyote is as wide as a big block...

For the computer I believe there is a Ford Racing engine harness that allows the use of orig computer and much simplifies wiring, but not sure how one gets around the security system and transponder keys... No doubt all the info is out there on some of the Mustang forums...

I would love to do this, but it gets expensive very fast! I can't give you a rundown on how much it costs, but I have searched this before when I was building a 66 comet. The little things like the need for a new throttle pedal, which was like $1500 because it's a drive by wire. You can buy a stand alone computer and harness from ford racing I believe also.

I wouldn't shave the towers. I would cut them OUT.

So there is $2000 in an aftermarket Mustang II kit before you even start to mess with the engine, trans, electronics, etc.

But I would do it in a second if I had that opportunity.

There was a guy at the 2013 Gathering in Iowa that had a mod motor in is car. I had a pix of it on here somewhere! Shaving the towers won't get him in the game -- removal will be the order of the day...

The guy on yellow bullet has a super nice car. He shaved his towers and runs struts with I believe fox body mustang spindles. The exhaust ports on the coyote exit more downward than out to the side, unlike Windsor style motors which helps. At least they appear to anyway.

I can identify with and validate that statement!

Dan Dubs has done this as I'd read an article on his swap. He's on here, but I've forgotten his forum name. Shock towers MUST be removed or the motor will never drop onto the k-member. Mustang II Suspension swap is the only way to go. Refer to the QUOTE, once more...

The one on yellow bullet has shaved shock towers and a strut suspension using fox body spindles. No mustang 2 conversion.

Actually it's 2 struts! HaHa. But really I was surprised too. Did you read through it? Pretty cool build...
