Ok, so I am replacing a head gasket and was thinking, should I upgrade the head with a later model head instead of using the original? It's a '75 250 il6. Anyway, I'm not sure but I'm reading that the later models have higher flow heads and will help the engine run better. Of course....money is an issue. If I can't do it affordably, I guess I'll stay with the stock log. I can always ask the local salvage yard if there is anything usable. Any suggestions guys?

If you on a budget, keep what you have. To upgrade a I6 head will be $500 to $1000. Then you need a cam and larger carb.

I say go for it, you should be able to get a later head with carb for $100 at a junkyard.

If you wanna rebuild the head add $200, rebuild the carb add $30-50.

So if I find an 80's head and carb combo from a Granada or something, I'd still need a cam upgrade too huh?

I know what you mean, I wish I could afford a v8 conversion, but its not in the cards right now, so I'm thinking to try to get the most out of the 6 as possible while keeping costs low for now.

If I can't find a decent 80's 250 head/carb setup and I do find an 80's 200 head/carb setup instead, will ii at least be better than my current 250 setup or do I need to stick with a 250 setup?

my opinion...FWIW...if you aren't going to change...cam, timming set, header or carb...if your head is good, use it... :yup:

using your head or any other one, it needs to be checked at a machine shop for, cracks and make sure the gasket surface is true...do a valve job if needed...$$$s

I may just pop the head and get the machine shop to check it out and just go with it if its good. Seems to be the safest bet at this juncture. Thanks everyone.
