got everything hooked up. When I turn the ignition she rumbles. When I let go, the car shuts off. What did I do wrong?

Starter turns, gas ignites, smoke from exhaust. Once the key is let loose, it shuts off

Sounds like the ignition switch on the column is not adjusted properly. Its on the column under the dash...

Did you have the wires off of the starter solenoid?

Before you dive into the column, was it running before the swap? If it was, I doubt that's the issue and would look to the solenoid as others have suggested.

One more thing to check is the resistor wire in the ignition harness I had this go on a Ford pickup and the truck would start and run with the key in the run position but shut off when the key returned to the run position!
A early 1970's ford with an factory tach will do the same thing if the tach burns out, the tach is wired in a series
and if it burns out it brakes the series!
