Stupid question, but i want to make sure....a 351 windsor will drop into a mav yes? if so what all has to be done to do this? i found a 351 windsor + transmission in my local bulliten board, they want 250 OBO for both, good deal?
It will bolt in but if you want to change plugs or put headers on it, you will have to shave the shock towers. I dont know much about which automatics were available behind the 351, probably depends on the application, but a C4 is about the only auto that will fit without modifications to the trans tunnel.
when i bought my 71 maverick it had a 351w in it. i ran it at the track for 3 1/2 years then blew the engine. went back to a 302. the 351w had headers that fit, but i don,t have any idea what brand they were. i'm keeping them just in case. the 302 has a lot more room in it if you aren't going to modify the shock towers, the 302 is a lot easier to work on. make sure it has a c-4 and not a c-6. if i had a 351w i'd probably stuff it in again as i'm a glutton for punishment. you can get a lot more cubic inches from a 351w but if it's strictly a street car, i'd think twice, because the ease of working on it makes a lot of difference. good luck.
Saw a 351W in a Mav at a car show recently. Unmodified shock towers. The header tubes on the front cylinders went forward, then down underneath the motor mounts. And the steering box had the corners ground down. What a mess!
