We are doing a quick build on a 70 base model Maverick 6 cylinder 3spd on column. Column shift mechanism is shot wanting to convert to floor shift, got under it today and noticed tail housing on trans. does not have mounting holes for shifter. Am I going to have to make a bracket or replace housing or just find a whole new trans. I converted a 71, 30 years ago and remember it being easy. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Mounting bracket won't do no good without a place to screw bracket to the tail housing. dbjcs- Welcome to the forum. I've seen a photo where someone used U-bolts that wrapped around the tail housing to snug the shifter to tail housing. But it didn't look like it could take much abuse...maybe if you shift gears slowly. To tell the truth it looked like a coat hanger would had done a better job than U-bolts
Its been a long time since I messed with one but if your trying to put on a factory 3 speed floor shifter, I believe the tail shaft housing is different. I'm pretty sure the shifter bolts directly to it. I converted a 71 a long time ago and I remember having to go back and get the housing.
aftermarket floor shift 'universal conversion' should include the brackets for using the tailshaft fasteners as Maverocket mentioned. Mav TL below had a Sparkomatic' floor shifter with brackets. The Maverick 3OTT toploaders deleted the tailshaft shifter lugs, Mudstaing and Maverick 3spd TL's - W & W/O shifter lugs : Have fun
Same memory here. Been years. Either find a floor shift tail housing or use the components that are with an aftermarket floor shifter.
