they should probably put it back in the ground and bury it for good is my guess. how could they possibly have "sealed" that car in a vaccuum bag AFTER they stuck it in the ground? Would have made more sense to do it on the surface them lower it in

I read a little about how they perserved the car before it went into the bag, it was covered in Cosmoline, which is what they use on guns so they dont rust, so that could be why the back of the car looks like that?? I hope.

I work just down the road. I went by on Wednesday just after they put up the plastic. AHH... There is a conspiracy theory around here that it may not be as bad as it appears and some of this is a publicity stunt. I don't know if I agree with that though.

Hopefully that stuff held up. At the Shelby meet cruise last night, some guys were saying that it had multiple layers over it, not just one vacuum sealed bag. I'm not sure of the details. We'll know today.

Well, it is mostly a publicity stunt... because if they opened it up, said here it is... then thats that... they want people to talk ;)

Well that's true. I meant the whole ripped bag, water thing as MORE of a publicity stunt - you know, to MAKE people talk MORE. Me? I don't know. I tend to think that it's probably had a lot of water in the capsule. I just hope it turns out different than I think.

So...what rips a bag when it is enclosed in a capsule? Water? Maybe the bag filled with water and the capsule drained and the weight of the water in the bag ripped the corner? :hmmm:

Well...I went downtown today to watch them lift the Belvedere. I was within 10 ft of it when they drove past and snapped a few phone pics. I think my optimistic thinking is doomed. As it went past, I saw two tears in the cover (front and back) and I could also see completely under it.
We'll see how the cosmoline held up. It's it rebuildable, yes - perfectly preserved - no way!

More pictures from today. The time capsule is in the last picture.
Remember that this thing has 3 layers of material on it. I don't know if that will make a difference though.
