Hey guys, Just wondering before I purchase this 8in.... It came from a 67 mustang and the spring perches are almost the same distance apart ( only about a 1/2 in. off (total). The measurement flange to flange is only about 3 1/2 in. off (total). will It fit right in? I realize that the stang is a little wider, but I can live with that. What about drive shafts....Wil I need to have mine shortened or change the yoke?. This has prolly allready been discussed but I couldn't find anything in the archives about it. If this works its only gonna cost me 50 bux for this thing drum to drum Your expertise is greatly appreaciated.
Thanks!!!! Thats good news. for future reference on rearends lengths and dimesions.... http://www.mustangsandmore.com/ubb/FordRearDimensions.html
Did you ever get your 67 mustang rearend put in? I'm wanting to do the same thing if I can locate 67 to 70 housing.
Cougar same as Mustang 1967-68 Cougar will be the same too. The one good thing that you will find under all classic Cougars is they all came with a V8 and either a 8 inch (1967-1968 only) or 9 inch (1967-1973). 1967 and 1968 8 inch ring and pinion ratios were 2.79:1 and 3.00:1. Only big block Cougars in 1967 and 1968 got a 9 inch rear end.
Thanks Krelboyne for the info. This gives me more options for using my 07 mustang wheels and tires on my 70 grabber. Now if I can just locate a 8'' housing, axles etc without 3rd member for a reasonable price so I don't have to buy wheel adapters.
Check the back spacing on those rims. I think you would be better off using an 8" from a 71-73 Stang. They need 6" to 7" back space when installed in a Mav. The 67-70 would only need about 5", which if I recall, is still less than those rims you have. Good thing about the 71-73 rears, 8" or 9", is that they are cheaper because they are not sought after. Other than the backspacing issue, they are all 'bolt in'. Dave
Yep, your so right. I might be better off using the 71 -73 instead of 67 -70 since wheels have 6.25 '' rear spacing. That way I would'nt have to use any spacer at all. Now to find one priced reasonable. Found one on ebay, wanted 225.00 plus 200.00 shipping for complete 8'' less 3rd member. I'll keep looking close to home. I guess I could use the rear out of my 71 Boss 351!!!
Looking at the numbers a little closer... First off, I was thinking the wheels you have were much closer to 7" BS. The Maverick rear is 51.50". The 67-70 is 54.25". The 71-73 is 56.00". Figure the Maverick uses 3.50" to 4.50" backspace max, average at 4". The 67-70 is 2.75" wider... or 1.375" added BS = 5.375". The 71-73 is 4.50" wider... or 2.250" added BS = 6.250". Okay... I feel better now. Just had to do some math to make sure I wasn't misleading. Double check it though. Don't believe everything you read on the boards!
