from Mad Goon that he used a '68 Mustang fuel sending unit in a '71 Comet. I need a new fuel sending unit for my '71 Comet and I found this part for a '68 mustang that is $50 cheaper than what I found for my '71 Comet. How do I tell if the Mustang version is compatible?

Here's the one I'm thinking about getting:

EDIT: Ooops! I supplied the wrong link. Here is the correct one

Also, is there a rule of thumb of compatible parts between a Mustang and Comet? Just curious as it seems like the Mustang parts are cheaper.

You would have to compare the Mustang reproduction one side by side with your OEM Ford Maverick fuel sending unit.

It primarily has to do with the inside shape and dimensions of your fuel tank. The pickup tube with sock, needs to be at the lowest portion of the fuel tank to draw all of the fuel. The float needs to touch the bottom and the top of the tank, at the extremes.

Thank you krelboyne. I got my new unit in yesterday and immediately noticed a difference. The Mustang one has a single post while the Comet has two post that connects to the cable. It will work once you make a new cable for the Comet as I tested it last night.

Once I get my take back from the shop, I will check to make sure the pickup tube sits at the lowest portion and the float hits both extremes.

    Thank you for your reply
