Well, I gave up on repairing the body on the 73, the welding will cost more than I want to pay. I found a 76 yesterday, which I bought today for $500. Solid floors, frame, rear quarters, trunk drops and engine bay aprons. Everything that was rotted out on the 73. This is RARE in New england. So, now I will be swapping the engine and transmission, as both on the 73 are completely rebuilt. They're both 250 L6's, so it will be mechanically straight forward. The 76 has factory electronic ignition, the 73 has a points distributor w/ MSD-5 ignition. EVERYTHING from the 73 is brand new, including the distributor, so I'm swapping it. Is there anything I should know or is the wiring pretty much a direct swap? I don't have the car home yet to check it out. Next- I bought a completely new suspension and manual steering set up for the 73, are all of the suspension parts interchangable? I know the spindles are not, but I will be using the drum spindles from the 73 also. The 76 is factory front disc, but I also just bought a complete 10" disc brake kit that fits the drum spindles. Any input/ opinions are appreciated! Thanks, Jim p.
I guess I would suggest selling the disc brake stuff for the drum spindles and stick with the factory set-up on the 1976. All the suspension parts are interchangeable.
I would stick with the factory electronic ignition (swap the 76 distributor into your engine) also and add your MSD to it.
The points distributor is brand new, I'd hate not to use it. The MSD converts the ignition system to electronic anyway, the points will never wear out again, they simply act as a trigger for the ignition now.
Hey I have a brand new distributor for my 250 aswell...howd you convert to it electronic man? On the verge of buying an electric one but i really dont wanna...
