Hello guys, I just picked up a 72 maverick for free. Awesome deal. It had a blown head gasket in the straight six. The head was done, I looked around for a head but way too expensive and just not worth it since I'll be putting a 302 in it anyways. So here's my dillemma. I have a good 302 out of a 78 mustang. So I'm good on the motor. I also have a set of hooker long length headers. I have the V8 motor mounts from the stang but will they work or should I just get new ones? I know about getting the different bell housing. What other parts from the motor to the trans do I actually need? And my last question is this.....I have a rear end out of a 73 grabber, is there anything I need to know about putting it in my 72? driveshaft and stuff? Also I ahve two very good doors with panels from the 73 grabber if anyone is interested, also rear glass and a few odds and ends. Thank you, and if you want to email me directly that's cool too. Brent
1. Make shure headers are for a Maverick 2. You need to get a set of V8 frame mounts and Maverick engine mounts 3. If the engine in the car is a 250 I6 no need to change bell housing. It is the same as a 302. 4 Rear end is the same from both cars. No need to change unless someone has done some work to the Grabber rear end or you just want to. I hope this answers your questions. Don
like don said make sure the hookers are for a maverick. just any 302 header will not fit. also if the rear end has a different gear you that you want you just have to change out the center section. welcome to the board.
to the board , 72 for free cant beat that , other than a blown head gasket is the car in good shape? any rust, have fun
thanks guys, The headers look like they'll fit, they were actually off of a grabber, or so the guy said. We'll see. One question though, any easy way to tell if it's a I6 250?
Hi 311rulzz, Yes, the water pump for the 250 I6 has 4 mounting bolts. The water pump on the 170 & 200 has 3 mounting bolts. Regards, BaldEagleMav
awesome, I'm glad I found this forum. I actually have some stock headers from the 78 302 also, if the hookers don't fit would anyone know if these would fit? The grabber rear end is a 5 lug, so I'd have to change the front end too. not ready for that.
311rulz.... my 70 maverick had the I6 i swapped it for an 85 302 the headers i used were from a 67 mustang and they fit in perfectly hope this helps
Just another question....I have a colum shifter what are some cheap headers that will fit....looking to spend around $300.
i doubt any cheap headers will fit. most say they are not compatible with a column shifter. however i think some on here have modified the column shifting ros and got them to work. you might try to look this up on the archives. go above to the search option.
mavericks and headers that fit should never be used in the same sentence (99.99% of the time) check out hooker 6901 1 5/8 long tubes they are the best fitting header
I used a set of Flow Tech headers on a 74 Grabber once with a 302/4speed combo and fit VERY well in clearing the clutch linkage so would probably do good with column linkage as well. Steve
