anybody know where i can track down parts/ gears for one of these? just got stuck with one from the granada i just picked up.
The 3.07 ratio rung a bell, I had a '70 Galaxie 500 with three on the tree that had same(and a '70 351 parts car with 2.75)... Sooo I checked the '71 shop manual and shur 'nuff it lists a 8.7" WER gear and at that time 2.75, 3.07 & 3.25 were avail... If new parts aren't avail, it's time to start checking '70s full size Fords for a better gear set... A chart in the '69 & '71 shop manuals shows this rear end was only avail in full size Fords and Meteors(Canadian), and is listed as NA in every other model... Usage would have no doubt been limited to the smaller engines(6cyl 289, 302, 351) as it's listed as a light duty unit... I also had a '67 Galaxie with 289 that had a rear cover rear in it but only had that one long enough to find it a new owner... No idea when it was installed in smaller models...
They shoulda just put their 9" rears in everything they ever sold, once they figured out how good the 9" rear was. Heck, even sent a post card out to everyone owning a Ford, saying "send in your rear, we will swap it with a 9" that fits" and be done with it. FOREVER!!! Wouldn't it be nice to find a Ford Festiva in a junk yard and be able to say "oooh, oooh, ooh! a SHORTENED 9" rear for my Maverick!!! Gonna make a drag car out of this thing!!!"
I agree 100% but like everything else, no one can leave well enough alone. Leaving that 9 inch alone would have put a lot of rear axle designers out of work
As far as full size models, that's exactly what Ford did until at least sometime in the mid '60s(was introduced in '57)... Not much doubt they knew how good the 9" is, the 8.7" was a effort at saving $$$ and later for weight savings during the '70s... Some exploring of the '65-'72 Master Parts Calogue, proved my suspicion... The WER was introduced for the '67 full size models and used a 8.5" ring gear till at least into '69 when 8.7" gear sets are also listed with deepest being 3.25... At that time('75) part number for the 3.25 gears is C9AZ-4209-D
