First off, I don't have space for a disc brake caliper and have to buy everthing out from the backing plates for an 8". 82 F100 drums are 40% cheaper than the Mav 10's, have 4.5 lugs, diameters are the same. Difference is the wider brake surface, drum has a flatter face to provide wider brake shoe surface but the critical stuff is the same. I read about this swap on the HAMB website, guy is using the 1 3/4 Mav shoes on the wider drum surface which is what Honda et al has been doing for decades. Dimensions for comparison are at http://catalog.brakewarehouse.com Taking this one step furtherm seems like the wider brake shoes from the F100 MIGHT work on the Mav backing plates for increased size rear brakes? Before I special order these parts and irritate the counterperson if it doesn't work, wondering if Anyone ever tried this?
Won't the Mav wheel cyls be off center on the wider shoes? Maybe F100 cyl would be centered on the wider shoes? I like the idea of beefier rear brakes with (someday maybe for me) disks up front. Hope it works.
I have all the stuff you need and some nice factory drums .. all came off a maverick pm me if interested
Ford made two 1982 1/2 PU's, one with 10" 4.5 lugs 2 1/2" shoes. I THINK it shared the same driveline with the Econonline van. If you search brakewarehouse.com for an 82 F100 6cyl (web link waaaay too long to post here) you will find the specs on the drum which are the same except for width. Instead of being beveled the face of the drum is "flatter" to accomadate the wider shoes. A guy posted it on the jalopyjournal.com, I was hoping someone here tried it. I ordered a drum, I'll post my results.
Very interesting. I did a little internet research and see where that drum was used on '80-'82 F100's. I can see where that would be a neat swap, since the wider drums used on big-block Mustangs & Fairlanes require their own unique backing plate, which are very hard to come by.
I'm the lurker here with the 40 Ford, soon to have a Mav rear axle which is the perfect width to center the drum in 37-40's My current GM disc brake axle has calipers at about 2 o clock which don't clear the frame near the bottom of the sping travel. I figure if you want info you gotta go to the source
