Does anyone know which 9in rear end housings will fit under my Mav ? I have been told 56-59 full size fords (hard to picture for me) ,65-66 Shelby/GT350 and The Lic. rear disk conversion. A little work is no problem, but I do not have a welder and Strange is WAY to expensive...Please..I have a 9in. with a set of 4.10 gears and a detroit locker for it (just the pumpkin) that came out of my first Hot Rod attempt...(72 Ford Ranchero 302, ran 13.52 at 106 mph at Ennis Raceway in Texas) Thanx in advance
The Lincoln Versallias had a 9 in rear with the added benifit of rear disks and is a direct bolt on swap for a mav , However finding one might be a problem ... I know that the Granada / Monarch had the same rear end in some instances but are probably even harder to find ... I am not sure if the Granada/Monarch with drum brakes is a 9 in or not , Mabey someone else here knows ...
I'm running a 9" from a '70 Mustang. It's a couple inches wider than the '65-'66 Mustang rear. I used some wheels that are offset more towards the inside to compensate.
I am doing the same thing with my comet. My housing is from a 69 mustang, I have the a same issue with the wheel offset and also the hub diameter. Early mustangs have a smaller hub diameter than the comet/maverick hubs. My wheels would not fit over the comet hubs.
To add to the already good info, Ford did not make the 9" until 57. So the 57-59 are narrow but the spring perchases would have to be relocated. Finding one in the first place would be just as hard as any. Check around locally. You might find it dosent cost that much to shorten a housing. Axles on the other hand, are the expensive part. But I believe a 28 spline Maverick axle will fit in a 28 spline 9" so your only cost would be to shorten the housing.
Here is a web site with ford 8' and 9" rear end width. http://www.dfwmotorsport.com/Fairlane/9inchrearends.htm
I bolted in a 1957 ford 9 inch and found the granada 8 inch axles fit..the mav 8 inch axles will couple but the splines will rip off ( they dont go in deep enuff) dont ask me how I know
how do I know I didnt have 57 axles and just slid the mav 8 inch axles in there to get me home...once close to home did a 6 grand drag race launch and rpms maxed !!! car no go...pulled axles out and the TIPS of the axle splines were riped off...granada 8 inch axles measured 1 inch longer than the mav 8 inch axles...slid right in and no more axle strip!! the c-4 grenaded next ( 3 of them ) they couldnt handle the 357 windsor small bolt c- 6 fixed that...then it was windshield comming loose from body twist...sub frame connectors fixed that...THEN the shocks got shoved through the trunk...a pipe welded from frame rail to frame rail solved that...and I relocated the shocks to the back side of the rear end and used traction bars...nice tolerable ride when cruising..then when I nail it, the rear end gets SUPER stiff and launches hard ( best of both worlds ) cheap 4 link so to speak
My car has a 1957 Ford Wagon 9" ...it is a bolt in the perches are already in the correct location, and I need to go out and measure again to varify ,but I think that the 9" is a little narrower that the Mav 8"was.
Aparently some people take truck 9" rear ends and cut them down to be the right size...... i've seen a large trucks 9" crammed into the back of a Datsun 210 (1/4)......also a chevy 350 (roughly the same ammount of hp as a vette) being crambed under the hood of the same truck. Hehe......small truck big power
Nothing Wrong With A 8" I had the same idea to try and find an 9" axle for my car but I found that I could still get everything for my 8" without hurting the pocket book to much. Compared to the price of a 9" rebuild it cost only $50 dollars more, and that was without trying to find a 9" that would fit. I managed to get an Auburn Locker 3.55 gears to replace the 2.73 stock gears, new bearings (the reason for the rebuild) and new axle shafts and to be honest I think it kicks a$$ compared to the old one.
