I have a chance to go plunder a '78 Granada, and I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time.

I think it would be a leaf sprung rearend, so it would fit the Mav, but I don't know whether '78 is going to have a weird bastard 8.7 or something like that.

Does anybody know what rear a Granada would have been equipped with in '78? If there's any chance of it being an 8 or a 9 I will go check it out, but if not I'll save my gas money...

    Thanks!

It could have any one of the 3 rears you mention.

Why not call the owner and ask if the rear has a back cover or not.
Don't ask anymore than that, or volunteer info. Just ask if the back cover unbolts.

If not, it is an 8" or 9".

They are rare, but it could also be ordered with rear discs.
The old rear discs are more complex and much heavier than modern rear discs, but if the price is right, it would be a nice score.

The rear is fully bolt in.
It is just a bit wider than the stock Mav rear. Not much.
Around an inch if memory serves me at the moment. Nothing to be concerned about unless your rear wheels are aftermarket and very tight fitting.

You have a chance at a 9" yet with a '78. So it is probably worth looking at.

But with Ford - it is a crap shoot as to what it has. :)

Also, I know that 9" rears were available during the entire production of leaf spring Granada/Monarchs. However I have noticed a trend towards them being much more common in the last year or two of production and, believe it or not, in I6 equipped cars.

It seems that Ford was clearing out 9" rears in 1979-80, to make room to switch to 8.8s.
