I've heard of installing an AOD trans in a maverick, I have one in my garage and was wondering if anyone knew what it takes to switch it with a c4? Transmission crossmember? Wiring? Kickdown linkage? Drive shaft (length)? Spedo- cable?
I put an AOD in my 71 F100 behind a 351w. It's not a Maverick but i can help on a few things. The AOD is a pretty big tranny. 1st thing I'd find out is if it'll fit the tunnle. The AOD uses it's own flexplate so you'll have to find one that's the right imbalnace for your engine. Should'nt be a problem. I bought a new one at autozone for a 28 ounce imbalance. The TV or throttle valve cable is very important, you'll fry the tranny in a block if it's not right. I used a Lokar TV cable and although I had trouble getting it adjusted correcly using their instructions I got it right and it's been running strong for 2 years now. I love the AOD in my truck. I can run 3.70 gears abd still cruise on the interstate at 2000 rpm at 65 mph clint
Would the tv cable and flex plate work from out of an 1988 grand marquis or crown vic? Thats what my AOD tranny came out of, I still have the car.
If you are running an early 302 and the doner engine is a 302 then no. They changed the 302 to a 50ounce imbalance around 80-81 and the earlier 302 are 28 ounce. I ordered one from advance for my 351 from a mid 80's F150 with a 351w. That way I got the 28 ounce balance. You could probably do the same clint
Probably. I have a truck 302 with a 164 tooth 28oz imbalance that I used when I did my swap. I used the Lokar cable as well. I made a cheap and quick relocation of the tranny crossmember directly behind the original location. It worked fine as I wasn't pushing any power to speak of. Hooker Super Comp headers don't like the AOD, it is wider farther back than the C4, so I had to notch my pan. If I had to do it all over again, I would have cut the header and welded it up instead. My AOD came from an 85/86 Crown Vic, not a desirable tranny. It will not hold up to a serious 302, it'll barely handle a stock 74 302 with bolt ons. btw, the way the cable was mounted up in the Crown Vic I had was reverse of how I could mount it on my car. It was a pusher, mine had to pull. Speedo worked fine, same tooth gear. Driveshaft worked fine...
I bought my AOD off Ebay. I went to Atlanta to pick it up. It was still in the guysMustang and as he worked at a Ford dealer down there he took me for a ride in the car before he pulled the tranny. This one had been rebuilt and beefed up though I don't know what was done too it. It handled the guys Mustang with a pretty serious 302 and has handled my 351w fine but it is only alittle above stock with C90E ported heads, headers and a Stealth Intake. Keep in mine that the AOD uses an AOD specific flex-plate and that there are 2 sizes of output yokes. I don't remember which year is which but after they changed the lubrication pathways around the rear shaft the yoke changed sizes. That's about all I know about it. The yoke I had would'nt fit, too large so I had to find a smaller yoke. Both were AOD yokes. An AOD can be made as strong as your money can handle. lol clint
hmm... I've got to find out about the yoke changes... I know the 85 had a lubrication problem. It could be corrected by rebuilding the tranny (or just rear) but it was still the weakest year regardless. I do believe that was fixed in the next year. AOD just uses a 164 tooth flywheel, same as on the large bellhousing C4's, full size cars and trucks. I got mine from a 77-78 302. An AOD is seriously expensive to build compared to a moderate C4... best donor you can get is a 92 F150/F250 or E150/E250. Toughest factory AOD there was. I don't remember all of the specifics off the top of my head, but it has the largest OD band or something... too late at night to remember something I'm still learning details of.
http://www.baumannengineering.com/index.htm has alot of info on the AOD and upgrades. When I had mine built it got the 2inch od band and drum, and a different direct clutch pack. The parts are all from the AODE.
