Cut out the shock towers, put in a mustang II suspension or aftermarket rack and pinion, and do a SEARCH on the Maverick/Comet forum...

By the way, WELCOME. too bad you got here at 9pm on a friday night, most of us are trying to drink each other under the keyboards at this time of night... :drink: :D

Put where you are located, and info on your car in your signature...saves a lot of questions later on, that will be asked over and over. Look below my post, see all the info. Nobody needs to ask what kind of engine, trans, or gears I have...it is all right there.

First thing everyone is going to do is ask if you have a MII front end swap, and you could put in down there and clear it right up...

Also, the 390 is a truck motor, low rpms, high torque. Kinda like putting a diesel in there.

Go with the 428 if you want a big block.

most of us just stress the crap out of small block 302s and 351s, since they fit, and can give pretty good horsepower without the extra weight of the big block. There are a few 10s cars on here with 302 and 351 blocks bored and stroked to "Bring out the best". There are also a couple of quick big blocks, but there is just a lot of work to put them in our cars.

Dude, that 428 is CRAP, just put it in a box and UPS it to me, I will dispose of it properly......

OK, you're right, old and stupid joke, I shall stop.

And, by the way, repeat this 10 times "Scooper is OK, Scooper is OK"... :D

Seriously, I hear that motor can be pushed pretty hard, but I have no personal experience. PM Shadowmaster, maybe a couple of other guys on here (not sure who all is familiar with big block fords).

My dad used to run big blocks in jet boats back in the 70s, and always knew that the 428 was one of the best...

"Already having one" is also a good thing, but getting that thing into a maverick without at 20' long shoe horn will be fun...

My grandpa has a '68 1/2 factory 428 Cobra Jet Mustang GT. My dad says that car was fast, VERY, VERY fast.

I just want the "built" 428 CJ my grandpa has sitting in storage. That engine is just ridiculous. I just keep seeing these pictures in my head of a deep shiny black Maverick with the "Cobra Jet" shaker, giving the only hint of what's hideing under the hood...

Don't take this the wrong way but if you have to ask then it's probably more work than you're qualified to handle. Essentially, you need to raise the car and get it level and square. There are plenty of chassis companies that have a manual on chassis setup. These will show you how to measure for squareness, how to locate the chassis centerline, etc, etc. You will need to do all of this before removing your stock suspension. From there, drop a plumb bob from the center of each spindle to locate the front wheel/tire location. This way, you can set up the Mustang II suspension and have the front end right where it's supposed to be. This is barely a "cliff's notes" version of the work required. Use the "Search" feature here to find other members who have done this conversion.

Also, the 428 is a great street/strip engine. Durable, makes tons of low rpm torque and horsepower. In a Maverick....that's a low, low 11 second street car. Easy.
