My 1976 Maverick (302 V8) still has the original blue distributor cap and rotor. While there is no burning need to change it now, let's recognize that these things eventually fail, plastic deteriorates, contacts wear, etc. I did some online searches and did not immediately see replacement units in the true blue color. My first instinct was to buy a Motorcraft or other high-quality replacement part. Are there sources for high-quality replacements in the blue color? What retail sources are recommended? Other ideas? Thanks.

I know some of the more reputable aftermarket manufacturers like MSD make blue ones that you can order and I think they still make OEM blue ones too.

When I worked in an auto parts store years ago, Standard Ignition products had 2 grades of products. Looks for their high end Blue Streak product it will have a X at the end of the part nimber. If I remember correctly they were blue.

Thanks. My Ford parts man tells me the Motorcraft units that you can buy new are gray. Likewise, I checked the website for Standard Motor Products and found gray color distributor caps. I did not find a specific part number for the Blue Steak product line...gave same part number as regular line. I will research the MSD option...Thanks to all.

On Standard Ignition it is the same base part number just add an X to the end.

Here is an update. The pointers you all have given have made this possible. I have learned that my problem/challenge is specific to 1975-1976 model years.

Blue Streak from Standard Motor Products makes a high-end blue distributor cap to fit 1970-1974 Ford V8 (and older, but this is a Maverick forum). This is the points-and-condensor-style ignition. The applications guides call for a different part number for 1975-1976, which is electronic ignition. Blue Streak no longer makes the part for the '75-'76 application. However, the folks at Standard Motor Products suggested that the older-style part number may work. Does anyone know what the actual difference is between the two caps? My next step is to buy one and make a visual comparison.

Other notes: New distributor caps sold by MSD and other suppliers for this appilcation are either gray or black. None are blue in color. I found an old NAPA cap on eBay, but it was NAPA's lower line and is no longer available. There may be some NOS parts out there somewhere, but it will take some time to find them. Not as easy as going to your nearest parts store and asking for the readily-available part...

The cap I got for my HO motor is turd brown (matches what the car used to be) and the cap adapter is black.:16suspect

From your picture, looks like you have a distributor and cap from a 1977 or newer vehicle. That is a different part than mine, which fits only 1975-1976 with the socket-style connectors. Cannot determine from your picture who manufactured your distributor cap. It could actually be the OEM Ford/Motorcraft part. If you pop it off and look inside, it might have some identifying markings.

Try searching for "Clear Dist Cap?" There is another thread on that. Thanks.
