I had my '70 media blasted down to bare metal, at the suggestion of my friend that owns the body shop that painted it. The idea was, since I was the 2nd owner and had no idea if there was any old body work hidden under the current paint, that this would give us a total picture of what the body was really like. Fortunately it was all good, no hidden issues. I'm really glad we did it. This was a bit over 10 years ago and at the time it cost around $1K to do.
The way the pros do it when sandblasting is after do any body work needing done then spray an epoxy sealant before primer. If you can't do it right when working with bare metal, might want to reconsider.
I would investigate "Soda blasting" before proceeding. It should be available in your area. I had a car soda blasted and the guy had a mobile rig.
Only if the person doing tne blasting knows what he's doing. Otherwise your body panels can get warped. I had my car blasted and it all came out good. Epoxy sealer is necessary in humid climates, but not dry climates...
What T.L. says about warped panels is true, do not sand blast. Media blast or soda blast and I have seen dry ice used or save your self some money and take it down with paint stripper messy but gets the job done makes sure to use gloves and maybe a respirator . If down to bare metal you will need to use a self etching primer then a good 2k primer is a great primer to use . Are you going to paint the car or have it done ?
