My vacuum canister, and the one off the 1972 V8 car I have some parts from, are both cylindrical 'coffee can' shapes. They are definitely not a softball shaped sphere. Both these cars are factory AC though.

My 74 mav has a coffee can shaped vacume canister as well. It's a/c car also and it was mounted just below and behind the charcoal canister.

Well, the canister does have a ridged line that connected to the stock air filter, and I can't see why a vaccum canister would do that, for my car I'm gonna go with Corbin's answer. That line has been unhooked since last winter too, and hasn't adversely affected my miledge so...

I wasn't trying to prove anyonw wrong, but I have factory air in my 73 302, and it was in a softball shape. I don't doubt that you guys has cylindrical ones, I just wanted to answer '72 Comet GT's question correctly. Sorry if I angered anyone. :(

No Anger here :) I don't think anyone can claim to be an expert on these minor details, that's why I just posted what I've seen.

Do not plug the line unless you vent your gas cap. My factory gas cap didn't vent well enough and I vacuum locked.

    I just leave it unplugged.

the one with the ridged line is your charcoal canister.

If you still have the carbon canister, I would suggest hooking it back up to the air cleaner. I just took the nipple from a stock air cleaner, bored a hole in the base plate of my new air cleaner, dropped the nipple through, and hooked up the hose. The cardboard tubing is still available from Ford. Part # D4ZZ9D667A for a 40" piece. Its better than letting fuel vapors collect under your hood and dosent rob any power.

Cool, glad that's cleared up. I wonder what the deal is with the different stlyes of vacuum resevoirs? I can't see a distinct difference in all our Mavericks/Comets, that would make them have different ones. Maybe it's like the fuel line differences... :)
