I went to the salvage yard today to find a pulley to eliminate the P/S on my 302 Maverick. I pulled on from a IL 300, it was too big, but the one that I pulled from a 360/390 pickup works fine. The belt is even close. I just thought that I would share this, although it has probably already been covered. I am talking about the water pump pulley of course.

hmmm, what is the diameter? does it spin close to the same speed? i bought a chrome one and think its too big around even with a high flow water pump..

The stock non-PS/AC pulley is fairly large in diameter. Almost looks like it won't go in. The AC/PS pulleys are smaller to cool better with all the accessories.

i had to wobble the chrome non PS over the groove for the PS belt in order to install it. also ground the metal back a bit too keep them from rubbing. does the 390 dual pulley have a part number i can use? also, is there a single pulley one i should look for? there are a lot of old trucks in the yards by me.

The one that I got came off from I believe a 67 3/4 ton. On the 302 in my car, the pulley on the crankshaft has both a large slot and a small one. The pulley that I pulled from the truck is a much smaller one than the one that was on the water pump, but I am now able to run it on the larger slot on the crankshaft. (I hope this makes sense). So the trade off is about the same as before, it was on the small slot, to larger pulley, now it is in the large slot to smaller pulley. The belts are only about 2 inches different than before.

Might be a C6AE-8509-A water pump pulley.

I do side work on this web site. We have a pretty good handle on Mustang and Cougar applications. Pictures and descriptions too. :)

This is just the 1968 applications. Feel free to poke around for 1967-73 applications.

Yes, I am still using the stock alt. bracket. Thanks for the info krelboyne. I took a pulley off from a 300 IL, but that one was the same diameter as the one that I took off, but it was a double pulley.

OK i may have to reconsider my setup then, the aftermarket brackets and pulley i purchased stink IMO. Thanks for pointing this setup out!

No problem. Good luck with your setup.
