    Hello Maverick/Comet community:

My oil gauge/line is leaking oil again. In the past I replaced the plastic line with a copper one to avoid leakage, but here we are again...

What would be a direct replacement that is electronic? A friend informed me that I could probably get an electronic sensor to avoid oil leaking inside car like it did.

I don’t think my other gauge are connected properly. So I think I will end up replacing the gauges for something better and electronic.

    car details: 1974 Inline6 250 Maverick.

    thanks all!

Any analog gauge will work. If the gauge manufacturer has a sending unit, you may want to use theirs instead of a factory one. I like the Stewart Warner Green Line series as they look similar to the factory gauges on the earlier models.

These look great, I will definitely consider these!! Thanks!

what size thread do I need for the sending unit to fit my car?

I have a 302, the sending unit was the same size as the factory one. Not sure what the 200, 250 uses.

AFAIK know oil pressure sending unit size is same for all american engines, prior to 4.6L(1991 for those wondering).. Small blocks, FE, 460, I6 etc are all same.

A properly installed mechanical gauge should never leak, usual leaks are from line being kinked, excessive or not enough line. My Cobra has had same line and gauge since 1973. Admittedly fittings on ends are silver soldered in place, why I bought it.

I use Autometer Phantom gauges, all electronic and uses the stock oil pressure sensor. Not sure if you will need the spacer block on the six cyl, but the gauges are bullet proof and accurate.

I have Autometer electric gauges. I had an oil gauge leak inside the car once, not from the line but from inside the gauge itself. Shot hot oil out and saturated the carpet under the dash. Made a big mess. I'll never run mechanical fluid gauges again.

Finally received my piece, I will upgrade the piece/oil change hopefully by this weekend!

quick question. The piece I received is bigger than expected. I thought it would screw directly where the copper line is but not too certain anymore.

where is the correct placement? It seems that the piece they sent me looks like a piece I already have? (I numbered it 3) but I think that electric line tied to #3 is for the dash light? Unfortunately just not too sure / lack the knowledge.

    Any help? Thanks in advance!!

The sensor needs to go where the copper line is now. The original part that looks like a sensor (3) is probably just a switch for the dash light, it closes when the oil pressure drops below a certain value..

Thanks for the quick reply! Couldn’t wait so I tried to install right now. Threads fit but I think this specific one might be too long for my car. My oil light also went on too.

Gonna get my oil out then pay a visit to the auto parts store.

That sending unit looks like it is for an idiot light. The gauge sending units look more like a small bell.
