    Engine / Trans options.

I've just bought my first Mav and I'm sorting out my engine/trans options based on some of what I'm reading here. Currently I'm intending to find/refresh an Explorer 302 and use a T5. My car is a '71 2 door with a 200/C4. I'd like a weekend driver with solid stoplight to stoplight performance and a nice rumble. How about it is this a good starting point for a dad on a budget?

    Help?

sounds like a good combo if you are going to just change the rings and bearings. if you find it's gotta go in for a rebore you might consider a 331 stroker kit. :)

I believe that the heads on the '97 up explorers are called "GT40P" ? How about the header options with these heads in a Maverick? I'm told that these are some of the best flowing, reasonable iron heads for the 302. But, I'm concerned that if I can't put a good set of headers under them, then I might as well use a more run-of-the-mill head.

Anyone have specific experience with these in a Mav?

The early 351w heads are good, with no header issues.
Port the huge bump out of the exhaust port and they are as good or better than production GT40 heads.

Depends what year Exploder engine you get, could be GT40s, could be P heads. As mentioned, 97-up have P heads. A few years ago I replace a set of fully ported and polished, 3-angle valved '70 351W heads with mildly ported P heads. The Ps made a noticeable difference.

Ok here's a new twist. How about Maverick header options for the Ford Racing aluminum heads. I've got a friend with a mildly used 302 from Ford Racing Crate engine program and he's offered me the motor at special good-guy pricing. I've heard his car run and it sounds great (with open exhaust). Any help with the header options would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to leave him hanging.

    Thanks!

I just did a 200 six per the info from this site. we have a about 175 hp with a rumpidy cam, head work and a t5. Could have gotten more HP with a header and larger carb, dare to be different. Check out the ford 6 site. Lots of stuff available for the 6. The down side is a V8 will make more HP for the same money spent.
